Erstausgabe
8vo. pp. 1 p.l., 186. 2 folding tables & 1 plate. text illus. cloth (cloth soiled). First Edition. Scarce. Lanchester made important contributions to automotive engineering and aerodynamics. A pioneer British motor car builder and founder of the Lanchester Engine Company, he is considered one of the "big three" English car engineers. In 1892 he began to study aeronautics seriously, eleven years before the first successful power flight. Through a study of the flight of herring gulls he eventually formulated his circulation theory of flight, the basis of aerodynamics and the foundation of modern aerofoil theory, but his theory was too far advanced for his time and his proposal to build an engine with a much greater power-to-weight ratio than any existing was not taken seriously. He abandoned his aerodynamic studies for ten years, but then in 1907 published a two-volume work, Aerial Flight, dealing with the problems of powered flight. In it he developed a model for the vortices that occur behind wings during flight, which included the first full description of lift and drag. Although his book was not well received in England, his work was taken up by German scientist Ludwig Prandtl who mathematicaly confirmed the correctness of Lanchester s vortex theory. In the second volume he dealt with aircraft stability, aerodonetics, and his phugoid theory which contained a description of oscillations and stalls.
