Internally some browning and foxing but overall a very good copy in a handsome binding. Lairesse (1641-1711) was a major figure in the art world of the Dutch Golden Age. He began his career as a painter, influenced initially by Rembrandt (who painted him - the portrait is in the Metropolitan in New York) and, later, by the French masters, especially Poussin. In 1690 he lost his sight due to congenital syphilis and so concentrated on art theory, writing two important works on the subject, Grondlegginge Ter Teekenkonst (1701) and Het Groot Schilderboek (1707) The Treatise on the Art of Painting is the English version of the second of these. Lairesse's theories departed from the practice of much Dutch seventeenth-century painting: he argued that serious painting should not represent everyday life but rather address high-minded historical, religious and mythological themes. Lairesse was an important influence on eighteenth-century artists, particularly in England where "The Grand Manner" was adopted as the ideal.

[4 = title, privilege, explanation] ll.First and only edition of a set of plates illustrating seven paintings by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711) in the council room of the former Court of Justice of Holland, Zeeland and West Friesland (now called the Lairesse room) in the Binnenhof in The Hague. The Court commissioned the paintings in 1684 and they were completed by 1688. They depict Aeneas carrying his father Anchises, an allegorical figure of Justice and five scenes from ancient Roman history, each representing a different virtue: Pompei (prudence), Scipio (moderation), Horatius Cocles (courage), Scipio again (steadfastness) and Papyrius (clemency). The printed image of each plate measures about 40 x 28 cm. In three cases the painting fills the plate; the other four paintings, being more or less square (about 23 x 23 cm to 29 x 29 cm in the plates), are depicted within the architectural context. Binding used. A very good copy.l Timmer, Gerard Lairesse (1942), p. 83, nr. 26; cf. [50]; [8] double ll.Beautiful set of engraved illustrations by the Dutch Golden Age painter and engraver Gerard de Lairesse (1641-1711) in its first state, with the engravings bearing the imprint of N. Visscher. Almost all known copies of the present work show differences in contents and order of the plates. The present copy contains the large double-page engraved title-page, the engraved title-page of the appendix and more than 100 engraved illustrations of varying sizes on 56 double-page leaves, including 31 large double-page illustrations.Gerard de Laraisse was the son of the Liège painter Renier Lairesse and followed in his father's footsteps. He moved to Amsterdam in 1666 to paint in the atelier of the art dealer Uilenburg, before starting out on his own. He became one of the famous painters and engravers of the Dutch Golden Age, producing works in a classic style depicting historical, allegorical and mythological subjects. His works were greatly appreciated during his lifetime and long after and he was sometimes even called the Dutch Poussin. Although Lairesse went blind in the 1690s, he was still able to earn his living teaching drawing and painting and writing instructional works on these matters. His lessons and works were all based on his own lifelong experience. De Lairesse's teachings also strongly influenced 18th-century book-illustration.With the bookplate of the Dutch art collector Joseph Augustin Brentano (1753-1821) on the front paste-down, with his signature at the foot of the bookplate in brown ink "J. A. Brentano".The binding shows slight signs of wear, slight foxing to the first few leaves and very slight foxing to the edges of the leaves throughout, the illustrations remain fine and clean. This large folio by Dutch physician, anatomist, poet, and playwright Govert Bidloo contains 105 plates engraved after Gérard de Lairesse, probably by Bloteling and Peter and Philip van Gunst. Lairesse displayed his figures with everyday realism and sensuality, contrasting the raw dissected parts of the body with the full, soft surfaces of undissected flesh surrounding them; placing flayed, bound figures in ordinary nightclothes or bedding; setting objects such as a book, a jar, a crawling fly in the same space as a dissected limb or torso. He thus brought the qualities of Dutch still-life painting into anatomical illustration, and gave a new, darker expression to the significance of dissection. De Lairesse's images of dissected pregnancies and premature infants also reflect compassionâ "a quality unusual in art that was intended primarily to be scientific.
