Cloth. 4to. Xviii, 402, lxxviii pages. Seventy-eight illustration plates. Fold-out maps. Stands on its own. SUBJECT (S) : Synagogues; Archeology - Syria - Doura-Europos. Dura-Europos was an "ancient city on the Euphrates. It was long known from literary sources, but its exact whereabouts, a site known as el-Salihiye, was discovered only accidentally by a British patrol during World War I. It was excavated by a Franco-American expedition in the years 1928-32. The city existed in Assyrian times and was reestablished in about 300 B. C. E. By Seleucus I Nicator. " "The synagogue at Dura-Europos, discovered in 1932, was found in a remarkable state of preservation. It lay just inside the city wall and when the inhabitants, judged expendable by the shrinking Roman Empire, attempted to strengthen the wall against the advancing Sassanid army, they tore off the roofs of the buildings just behind the wall and filled them with sand from the desert. The synagogue was accordingly as securely buried and protected as Pompeii. The paintings, completed only some five years before the city fell, emerged from the sand nearly as fresh as when painted. "(Goodenough & Avi-Yonah, EJ). OCLC45860709. Ex library, summary from jacket taped to front end paper, very good condition. (MX-9-13).

Hardcover. Zustand: vg. Augmented edition. Lg. 4to. xxi,468,78,12pp. Mottled blue cloth with gold lettering on spine in original illustrated dust jacket. "Since its discovery in 1932, the Synagogue at the Syrian city of Dura-Europos has evoked unusual interest and widespread discussion chiefly because of its elaborate decoration with paintings representing scenes from the Hebrew Bible. This volume, edited by the director of the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute and a team of Yale experts, is the complete and official report on the Synagogue and its place in the history of Dura and in the Judaism of the early Christian era. The detailed description of this Synagogue presents the layout and locations of the buildings, their decorations, their furnishings and inscriptions. It then proceeds to give the history of the Jewish community at Dura and the relationship between the paintings and the religious thought of the community. Added to this new edition is a general index, a glossary of Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, and Latin words, citations, an index of Aramaic, Greek, and Middle-Iranian inscriptions from the Synagogue, corrections to the first edition, and a listing of Middle Iranian words and proper names. Published in 1965 by Yale University Press, The Synagogue has been much sought after by biblical scholars, and scholars interested in the history of Judaism. This reprint edition includes all the original 117 black and white photographs, 32 color plates, and 12 floor plans." The color plates show painted wall panels, the ceiling, and Torah shrine. Includes some b/w in-text drawings. Foreword by Professor Jaroslav Pelikan. As new.

Original blue cloth with gold lettering on front cover and spine. Additionally illustrated with approx. 124 text drawings. Volume VIII, Part I, (complete in itself) of the Excavations at Dura-Europos deals with the Synagogue of Dura and its still preserved wall decorations. Dura-Europos (Fort Europos) was a Hellenistic, Parthian and Roman border city built on an escarpment above the Euphrates River. It is located near the village of Salhiyé, in today's Syria. Spine of binding somewhat dulled and first page of the plate section is a bit foxed, otherwise a very good + copy.
