Folio. Pp. 24. With 53 mounted plates, of which 21 colourful plates of dancers. Publisher's calf decorated in gilt, gilt dentelles, spine lightly faded. First edition, limited to 200 copies, of which this is no. 15. Tyra Kleen travelled to Java and Bali in 1919 where she studied the ritual court dances. This work is devoted to temple dancers in Bali. The text is accompanied by plates depicting clothes, head garments, dance movements, and musicians. The illustrations show her unique artistic oeuvre with the ability to interweave dance, literature, activism and adventure. For her scientific ethnographic work on Bali Tyra was awarded the Johan August Wahlberg silver medal in 1938. A beautiful copy with dynamic, colourful art deco style images of dancers.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First Thus. 31cm x 24cm. 27 pages, 77 plates (24 coloured). Original cloth, new leather labels, gilt lettering. Tyra Kleen (1874-1951) was a Swedish artist, ethnographic researcher, keen theosophist, cosmopolitan woman of the world, and a founding member of Foreningen Svenska Konstnarinnor (The Association of Swedish Women Artists). Kleen studied painting in Germany and France, lived and socialised with the cultural elite in Rome at the turn of the 19th century, and travelled, exhibited, and socialised extensively around the world. A fiercely independent character, despite rampant misogyny, she managed to skilfully manoeuvre and at times manipulate to achieve her ambitious goals. She spent many years throughout the 1910s and 1920s in Indonesia, studying ceremonial dance, and produced a number of books on dance, theatre, and ritual in Java and Bali, and in 1938 was awarded the Johan August Wahlberg for her work there. The Temple Dances in Bali includes short text on the Legong, Chalon Arong, and Joghed dances, costume, and music, with illustrations in the text, complimented by numerous captioned plates by Kleen. First published in Swedish in a limited edition of 300 copies as Tempeldanser och musikinstrument pa Bali, and here translated into English for the first time. Original half green cloth on paper covered boards, upper cover illustrated, Head of spine with small repair (nicely done), some light stain and discolouration to back cover. First Swedish edition, translated from English by Ingeborg Kleen (Tyra's sister). Scarce. Tyra Kleen, a Swedish author and women's rights activist who spent several years abroad. She acquired a unique artistic and continental symbolist style. She was only 22 years old when she made the illustrations for Olive Schreiner's book Dreams. The book contains eleven short stories based on the author's dreams and life on a farm in South Africa. While studying in Paris, she had her first solo exhibition in 1896. She was truly a symbolist of her time and saw herself as a European artist and a vagabond rather than a Swedish artist.
