Softcover. Zustand: Gut. 254 p. Leicht bestoßen, vergilbt, sonst guter Zustand. Vorderer Einband beschriftet. / Slightly scuffed, yellowed, otherwise in good condition. Front cover inscribed. - This collection of eight essays by some of today's most innovative and seminal thinkers argues that there is a limit beyond which the enterprise of literary theory becomes something different from what it presents itself as being. These writers ask, in different ways, how theory functions and how it might preserve within its own practices and effects the freedom of reading, the presence of the real, and the challenge of a voice speaking outside the rhetorics of mastery. Each of these writers addresses from a different perspective what is perhaps the most paradoxical aspect of theory's current hegemony within literary studies. For its practitioners, the commitment to theory was born in its challenge to the scholastic and deadening certainties of conventional literary history, of a comfortably isolated philology, and of self-perpetuating notions of the canon. They aimed toward something more clear headed and honest, a self-reflexive discourse candidly pointing to its moves even as it made them, carefully refusing its authority even as it spoke authoritatively. When these writers survey the intellectual tenor of the academy today, they find that the repressive monoliths of the past have disappeared with hardly a whimper. At the same time, embarrassingly enough, the one truly healthy orthodoxy, secure in its authority and imperial in its practices, is that of literary theory and its various methodologies. Confronted with so paradoxical a Situation, these essays help us to understand how that transformation occurred, what price we pay in ignoring it, and how the practice of theory might once again fulfill its original promise.
