They made several important discoveries & proved much - such as the fact digestion is not solely conducted in the stomach, discovered glucose in the blood converted from starch & other foodstuffs by proteins, discovered taurine, etc etc. Garrison Morton 988 . 975 grams.

Paris, J. B. Baillière, 1843-1847. Seven text parts in eight, and two atlas parts in one. 8vo text (20.5 x 12.7 cm), and folio atlas (31.1 x 23.5 cm) with 33 lithographed and engraved plates with descriptive text. Uniform contemporary green morocco over green mottled boards. Spines with four raised bands, gilt vignettes and black morocco labels with gilt title. Marbled endpapers, speckled edges. = A uniform set of this important anatomical work by a group of the foremost German medical doctors and anatomists, including Samuel Thomas Soemmering (1755-1830), and several others (Weber, Valentin, Henle, Huschke, etc.), in the French translation by the French medical doctor, and translator Antoine Jacques Louis Jourdan (1788-1848). The atlas volume is of particular interest showing what might be the first rendering of human skeletons in motion, by G. and E. Weber. On the half-titles, the volumes are numbered II-VIII (vol. V published in two parts), with atlases to volumes II and VIII bound in one; volume I was never published, therefore the work is complete. Former owner's name written in pencil in the half-titles margin. A fine set in an attractive, rich, contemporary binding. Bayle & Thillaye II, pp. 773-774 (Soemmering); Morton (4th ed.), 6708.
