Hardcover. Zustand: F. First edition thus. 180 pages, 1 leaf : color frontispiece ; plates ; 25 cm. ; green full cloth with dulled gilt spine lettering ; slipcased. UNCUT Facsimile reprint of the original 1937 Book Club of Texas edition. Jenkins BTB 85b: "Of the four accounts by contemporaries, Thomas W. Streeter calls this one 'an indispensable source and by far the best of the group.' Besides giving an eyewitness account of one of the most fascinating events in Texas history, it includes much valuable information on Texas during a period that still remains historically clouded." The book comprises two books published in Paris in the mid-1800s; one documented the Texas settlement of French nationals who, fleeing Napoleon's France, settled in east Texas. The other book was a romance depicting a couple within that settlement. Jenkins, in Basic Texas Books, states that "this is the best contemporary account of the ill-fated colony of Napoleonic refugees in Texas." Jenkins BTB 85-Bk.
