Zustand: Gut. XXXIX, 769 Seiten / p. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - sehr guter Zustand / very good condition - The sixteenth century, which saw the emergence of England from the Middle Ages into the modern world, has always been acknowledged as one of the greatest periods of English poetry - as, with such names to its credit as Spenser, Shakespeare, and Donne, it could hardly fail to be. The century saw England change from a Catholic to a Protestant country, and from an essentially feudal to a capitalist economy; it saw London develop from a large town into a metropolis; and it saw too, along with a new sense of national identity, an enormous expansion in the expressive resources of the English language. -- Too often over the last hundred years poetry anthologies have represented this crucial transitional age in a form too narrowly selective and biased, focusing on the great golden achievements of the late Elizabethans (lyric, sonnet, mythological verse) at the expense of other quite different forms of writing. This New Oxford Book makes a radically fresh selection. It aims to display the riches of the age in something more like their full scope and diversity. While including many of the acknowledged masterworks, it gives ample space to satire, epigram, and grotesquerie; religious, political, and social verse; and, not least, translations, which often amount to great original poems. -- A number of long poems are given in their entirety, while others are represented by complete episodes which can be enjoyed for themselves. Many poems have never been anthologized before, and will be unfamiliar to most readers. -- The poems are presented in a form which makes them easily accessible: texts are given in modernized spelling and difficult or ambiguous words and phrases have been glossed. There is also a substantial introductory essay. ISBN 9780192141262 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 873 14,3 x 3,8 x 22,2 cm, Originalhardcover mit Schutzumschlag / with dust jacket.
