Zustand: Good. 1961. Unpaginated. White pictorial paperback. Printed in French. Colour illustrative plates within. Pages and binding are presentable with no major defects. Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, light foxing, tanning and thumb marking. Overall a good condition item. Paper cover has mild edge wear with light rubbing and creasing. Some light marking and tanning.

When offering Heritage Press books for sale, I usually include a short paragraph about getting value for money in the book trade.How about some great literature, in a well-made example of the bookbinders trade, published with outstanding choices of presentation and illustration, and including the short "Sandglass" note about book and author. Please find a very nice copy, in near fine condition, of: "The Gods Are A-Thirst" by Anatole France, the authorized translation from the French by Alfred Allinson: with an Introduction by Anfee Maurois and illustrations by Jean Oberle. The "Sandglass" (Number VI-21) is laid-in. Condition: This book in its custom slipcase is in very good condition. The slipcase is perhaps a bit dust-dulled but generally clean--one or two small spots of soiling and without wear. The finish and lettering on the spine of the book is very slightly faded but still fully legible. The hard covers are flawless, without wear or bumping. Inside the book is unmarked and the pages and plates are clean and bright throughout, without toning or foxing. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. P.S. There is a whole universe of people who are knowledgeable about the Heritage Press/Club books and their links to the Limited Editions Club. I am offering this book, however, as an example of quality literature in a quality book, one you will enjoy holding in your hand and reading and one that will look great on the bookshelf too (and with the "Sandglass" which takes you into the world of the book trade).

First published in France in 1923 as Minuit. Place Pigalle, this was subversive author Maurice Dekobra's story of Mr Prosper, a hotel waiter who escapes busy city life for the country but soon misses the hustle and bustle of Parisian life. He moves back to Place Pigalle where he soon indulges in a life of debauchery. The novel is a portrait of the city's dark corners and a decent man's rapid descent into poverty. With twelve woodcuts by Jean Oberle, a French artist who later became one of the main French speakers on Radio Londres, the Free French broadcasts of the BBC during the Second World War. Condition: Fair condition only. The spine is faded and there is a tear to the rear joint. The frontispiece is neatly detached but all twelve woodcuts by Jean Oberle are present. Light spotting throughout but remaining in good readable condition.
