Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Wolfgang Haase, langjährigem Herausgeber der ANRW und des International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT) / From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Akzeptabler Zustand, Einband sichtlich berieben und bestoßen, stellenweise leicht gerissen. Schmutztitel mit Stempelaufdruck / Acceptable condition, binding visibly rubbed and scuffed, slightly torn in places. Half title with stamp imprint. - INTRODUCTION My desire is to present in this book a philological analysis of a number of closely connected philosophical terms in Sextus* works and draw some conclusions. As this approach is new I have no recourse to other authors works, whose importance for the philosophical interpretation of Sextus is undoubted (for example studies of Mates, De Lacy, J. Grenier, Dumont, etc. and the excellent monograph of M. del Pra, Lo Scetticismo Greco). On the contrary, as Sextus and scepticism in general excite primarily a philosophical interest, my contribution is but a precondition for a more penetrating insight on the part of historians of Greek philosophy. As for the relative chronology of Sextus books and his effort for an improved style, my main aids were my Prolegomena to Sextus Empiricus (1948) and Indices (1962); as concerns the text, I follow the edition of Mutschmann ameliorated by Mau (PH, ? I VI). Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

INTRODUCTION.* On examining the work hitherto devoted by philologists to the Sceptic philosopher Sextus Empiricus I do not refer to the work of historians of philosophy we find that a critical edition of the text was published by Mutschmann: Sexti Empirici Opera Vol. I ??????e??? ?p?t?p?se?? I. III. Teubner 1912, Vol. II Adversus dogmaticos 1. \r (Adversus mathe- maticos 1. VII XI) Teubner 1914. Before publishing the third work, i. e. Adversus mathematicos 1. I VI, Mutschmann died. (In the following pages I shall use these abbreviations: PH, ? VII XI, ? I VI.) In the matter of commentaries we are not so well off. Fabricius edition, published in 1718, is of course obsolete, and Pappenheim in 1881 explained only PH. To a certain degree a commentary can be replaced by Bury s good translation (with a few notes) together with his edition of Sextus Empiricus (Sextus Empiricus, London 1933 36 in 3 vols., again without ? I VI). Bury s edition contains several new parallels between PH and ? VII XI, which are not mentioned by Mutschmann. There is neither a dictionary nor a complete index to Sextus Empiricus. The indices in Fabricius , Bekker s (1842) and Bury s editions are by no means complete. Last [of all there is W. Heintz s book Studien zu Sextus Empiricus (Halle 1932). The critics appreciated this work as the latest considerable contribution to the textual criticism of Sextus" (see Bury I. p. XLIV), but its special value is in a very subtle interpretation of the text. Heintz himself is aware of it and says (p. 4): ,Dabei steht die Interpretation zwar zu- nachst im Dienste der Textkritik, doch zeigt es sich oft genug, daB gerade die Textkritik zu einem tieferen geschichtlichen Verstandnis hinfiihrt." We may say that these and some other less important works (for the list see e. g. Oberweg-Praechter, GrundriB der Geschichte der Philosophic I.12 p. 183) attempt to interpret the subject matter of Sextus s work. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Buch
Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Der tschechische Philologe Karel Janácek (1906 - 1996) war 'the most eminent Sextan scholar of the century' (Jonathan Barnes).
