Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 209-218. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Slightly bumped, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: What distinguishes the portrait from all other genres is the fact that independently of it there exists a technique of making casts of human faces. This method of the mechanical duplication of a human face is attested to in many cultures all over the world. It is motivated by the desire to prevent the physical decay of a dead person by the immortalisation of the most characteristic feature of his appearance. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

In his work attempts to reconstruct lost originals of ancient Greek sculptures with the help of literary sources and Roman copies reached its absolute height. This great connoisseur of Greek and Roman art hoped more than anybody else to introduce into classical archaeology, if not the methods of exact sciences, so surely their spirit of objectivity. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 225-240. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: Every man must at some time have more or less suffered from the weight of his condition in society. The first thing is to catch these marks so that when you have to paint a King, an army general, minister, magistrate, priest, philosopher or a bearer, these persons will be as much of their conditions as possible. Maurice Quentin de La Tour (1704-1788). Quentin de La Tour, like all portraitists of all periods, knew very well that he must respect above all the mask of his sitter. And the portraited person knew that by its conspicuous and lasting form, a portrait elevated him to the social position claimed by this mask. The portraits power to affect the social hierachy is its main raison dêtre and thus it was fully exploited from the beginning of this genre. To such a degree that it can be said that Charles I and the English aristocrat are, as a matter of fact, creations of Van Dyck. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Zustand: Gut. pp. 107-116. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Author's name handwritten on wrapper, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: For any contemplation on portraiture the definition of its relation to the portraited person is crucial. It must have been evident from the very beginning of this genre that portraits are not only forms which we see, but also something more. The problem is in a definition of that something more. Our tradition of portraiture originated in ancient Rome but Roman authors are not very helpful in this matter. Consequently, we had to approach this theme in an oblique way and use mainly indirect evidence, which of course makes our conclusions very hypothetical. However, the aim of this study in not to reconstruct ancient Roman conception of portraiture, but merely to indicate that the spectrum of notions on the portrait-model relationship was probably very wide and might already contain a lot of that which we find explicitly expressed in much later writings. Reprint, stapled. Zustand: Gut. pp. 121-143. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Cover a bit rubbed and bumped, author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise clean. - From the text: In spite of the fact that the portrait is important for art, instructive for history, and indispensable for the family there is a certain underestimation . of the portrait genre as such. These words were written by Rudolf Eitelberger von Edelberg, the first professor of history of modem art in Vienna and in a way founder of the Viennese school of art history which later revolutionized the study of Roman portraits. The quotation is from a lecture he delivered in 1860. When he reprinted it in 1883, he added an appendix to it which illustrates better than anything else the change in the status of the portrait genre between 1860 and 1883. The lecture, writes von Edelberg, was directed against the then prevailing notion of artists who underestimated the portrait and in a certain sense considered it as belonging to the lowest level of art . I took the doctrine according to which painting was divided into so-called monumental painting and lower painting as completely erroneous and contradicting the whole tradition of art, in the same way as the doctrine that the portrait excludes the ideal . Since that time . portrait painting . has gained an ever greater reputation in circles of artists and experts on art. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
