FIRST EDITION 1783, parallel text in English and French, 4to, approximately 270 x 210 mm, 10½ x 8½ inches, extra engraved pictorial title page with French text under half page engraving, 11 hand coloured engraved plates (several images on each) drawn from nature by James Barbut (Jaques Barbut), engraved title, printed title, pages: xx including list of subscribers, followed by 2 page Apology, 1-101 plus blank page unnumbered. Bound in full tree calf, rebacked in modern calf, maroon gilt lettered label and gilt decoration between raised bands to spine, gilt leaf scroll to edges of covers. Small hole page 87/88 repaired with archival tape, loss of a few words and letters, affecting the English text on recto and the French on verso, slightly affecting the legibility of 5 short lines, offsetting to printed title from engraved title, offsetting to text from colour plates, colour plates clean, some light age-browning, some shallow nicks to fore-edges, hardly noticeable, evidence of removal of bookplate or label from front pastedown, endpapers and pastedowns a little dusty and lightly crinkled, last pastedown has small graze at outer edge, otherwise a very good copy. Provenance: Armorial book plate of William Battell, together with ownership inscription noting purchase date of 1799, and price of each volume ('1:9:0' and '1:0:0'); also with manuscript note in his hand outlining the characters of the seven orders of insects pasted to flyleaf; Armorial bookplate of H.F. Davies, Elmley Castle. First editions. Parallel English / French text. Genera Insectorum with engraved title in English (with hand-coloured engraving), printed title in French; Genera Vermium with engraved title to Pt I in French, printed title in English; Pt II engraved title only (in English). Extremities rubbed, upper third of pages 55-60 darkened, sporadic spotting, foredge of one leaf reinforced without affecting text, early photocopy of heraldic bookplate on front pastedown.Text in English and French but without the engraved English titlepage. Including 2 folding anatomical plates which in this copy are also hand coloured. Plates generally clean and bright. [Freeman 196].

FIRST EDITION, engraved frontispiece, engraved title of part II, 25 highly decorative plates (24 of which hand-coloured), text in French and English in parallel columns, title with faint off-setting and small ink smudge at margin, neat manuscript line in ink describing edition at foot of title, pp. [i, frontispiece], xx, 101, [i], [11 plates]; [ii], xxvii, [i], 76, [14 plates], 4to, contemporary sprinkled calf, spine with gilt typographical stars between gilt decorated rules, green morocco gilt-lettered label, boards with a few abrasions, hinges strengthened, very good. James Barbut (c.1711-1791) was a naturalist and painter, and exhibited several paintings at the Royal Academy of Art between 1777 and 1786, in which accurate depictions of marine life predominate. His reputation in his own time was such that he was able to engage the pre-eminent engravers of the day - James Newton, Thomas Woodman and Henry Mutlow - for this edition, and include, amongst his long list of subscribers, Sir Joseph Banks, President of the Royal Society. Barbut's whole-hearted admiration for Linnaeus is clear from the outset, 'though certain persons have taken the liberty to criticize the works of this wonderful man, they are much inferior to him in brilliancy of wit and fidelity of judgement, as a glow worm is to the evening star' (page iii); and though he opens with an apology for his reliance on literary sources in the absence first-hand experience of certain specimens, he continues 'let us take a nearer view of them, and our admiration will increase as our ignorance wears away; and the mind shall become illumined.'
