Dark bottle green quarter morocco with gilt titles to spine, moss green cloth-covered boards and large gilt crest to upper board matching frontis. Top edge gilt; marbled endpapers. C loth rubbed to edge with wear, and lightly stained and scuffed; corners bruised. Scattered light foxing as common for this title; text to accompany Plate 73 bound upside down; some offsetting to text of Plate 88 and a little very slight offsetting to others. No annotation or inscriptions. A Very Good copy. Lavishly illustrated and handsomely bound. The seating in the quire of St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle contains the gilded and decorated metal stall plates for each of the Knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, which was founded by Edward III and is the highest order of chivalry in English heraldry. The order is dedicated to St George and this study covers the Garter Knights from foundation in 1348 up to the beginning of the Tudor period. Heavyweight, so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.

The first edition of this work. A scarce work. A work looking at the stall plates of the Knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. The Order of the Garter was an order of chivalry, founded in King Edward III in 1348. Illustrated with eighty-nine colour plates, two of which are folding, and one of which is double paged. Compiled by William St John Hope, and English antiquary. He was interested in heraldry since his childhood. Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'Stanley Leonard Barry'. Barry had a distinguished career in the army, serving in the Boer War and the First World War, receiving many medals for his achievements. With a slip tipped in to the verso to the front endpaper, listing the twenty-five founder companions. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper, 'Matthew B. Sil. December 1902', and 'Stanley L. Barry, June 1931'. Collated, complete. Rebound in a full morocco binding. Externally, smart. Bookplate to the front pastedown. With a slip tipped in to the verso to the front endpaper, and one to the recto to the rear endpaper. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spots. Very Good Indeed. book.
