Buch
Zustand: Sehr gut. Umschlag berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - When a patient goes to the hospital, he enters a world centered on the diagnosis and treatment of chronic and acute illness. He becomes the key actor in the medical drama, but other people and other factors play a crucial role in determining what happens to him from the time he enters the hospital. This book is the result of a five-year study of the behavior of persons involved in the care of patients within the hospital setting. It focuses upon the patient and on the process by which patients assume, act, and relinquish the role of the sick. It explores the interrelationships between patient and family, the hospital, doctors, and hospital personnel. The study also takes into account the influence of the physical disease, as well as those of the home, community, and hospital social systems, and analyzes these influences and their impact upon patient care and the patient. This book examines questions affecting all of us: Should the quality of medical care vary drastically as it now does between services for the poor and for the self-sufficient? What are the consequences of deceptions and half-truths between patients, doctors, and families? How can the doctor enlarge his area of vision to include not only the physical disease and its progress but also the patient as a human being? How do factors other than the physical disease itself affect hospital care? What is the impact of the illness on the sick person and on his family? From different perspectives-August Hollingshead's background is in sociology and Raymond Duff's in medicine-the authors seek to examine these questions and to suggest vital changes. Before congratulating ourselves on present-day medical care, they say, we might better face with courage and honesty the issues raised in this book.
