General Frédéric-Georges Herr (1855-1932). One of the most useful books on the development of ideas and artillery. It went through several editions, and in 1925 was translated into German as "Die Artillerie in Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft". In 1912, Herr had observed the Balkan wars and predicted many of the features of the war he later was to fight in Verdun. Already by 1915 it had become clear to him that the main problem facing artillery was no longer a simple question of supply and materials and that "a gigantic intellectual effort was required". Successful artillery was to become a complex techno-scientific problem, and the solution was "the scientific preparation of shooting" ("la préparation scientifique du tir"). TIMO-5 IN.
