Zustand: Very Good. 3rd edition. Later half calf over marbled boards, VG. ht+tp+[viii]+378+[v]+tp+[x]+456+[iv]pp, folio. Index to each part, solidly rebound in a late 19th century binding, slightly trimmed in the rebind which has not affected the text but has reduced the margins a little & trimmed an ownership signature on the title to the point of illegibility, pages generally a little yellowed with the occasional foxing, ink stamp of a Jesuit Library on the endpaper & title & an old small library bookplate of the same on the pastedown, a nice copy. Printed in double column. Collected sermons, of the popular Bohemian Jesuit preacher Philip von Hartung [ 1629 - 1682 ]. 'The sermons of Philip von Hartung are very unequal; some of them are polished gems, others are very rough diamonds; but none are without value. The preacher had his mind stored with matter, but he was wanting in the art of nicely digesting it, and reproducing what fermented in his brain' [ Baring Gould - Post Medieval Preachers ]. There are 3 sermons for each Sunday & Feast day - one each for a rural, urban & courtly congregation respectively. Those for the rural audience, where Hartung no doubt was most at ease, are the best. 'The rustic sermons are capital. He preaches on broad facts of religion, Sunday after Sunday, with striking vigour, considerable beauty, and no small amount of originality'. [ibid]. 2750 grams.

A two-part collection of homilies/sermons by Philip von Hartung (1629-1682), a popular Jesuit preacher from Bohemia. Parts were published separately and, subsequently, bound into one physical volume. The first part contains homilies/sermons from the First Sunday of Advent to the seventh Sunday after Easter ("A Dominica I. Adventus, ad Dominicam Ultimam Post Pascha"); the second part contains homilies/sermons from Pentecost to Advent ("A Pentecoste ad Adventum"). There are three sermons for each Sunday and Feast day - one each for a rural, urban and courtly congregation respectively. Antiqua typesetting; title pages have a cut/vignette; other pages are decorated with headpieces, tailpieces and initials. The subtitle of the first part runs as follows: "Opus A Plurimis Desideratissimum, Et Exspectatissimum, Ac Multorum liborum Succus Atque Compendium". The half-title contains a title of both (?) parts: "Conciones Tergeminae in Dominicas & Festa totius Anni."
