Erstausgabe
First edition of this important eye-witness account of the British campaigns in Somaliland. Hamilton (1874-1913), the son of an officer who served with the 2nd West India Regiment, and of the line of the Hamilton baronets of Silvertonhill, Lanarkshire, was a special correspondent, attached to the 6th King's African Rifles. He had visited Korea in 1903-4 for the New York Evening Sun; reported on the Boer War for The Times, bottled up in Mafeking with Baden-Powell; covered the Boxer Rebellion for the Pall Mall Gazette, and was at Russian headquarters for the Russo-Japanese War. Following his coverage of the Abor Mission he was assigned to the Balkans during the disturbances of 1912-13. Tragically the present work was to be his last, as in May 1913, depressed by the failure of his American lecture tour and out of funds, he cut his own throat in a New York hotel room. Octavo. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, single frame to front board gilt, top edge gilt. Monochrome photographic frontispiece with tissue guard, 23 similar plates, one coloured folding map. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown, library stamp of Queensland Parliamentary Library to front free endpaper, recto of frontispiece, and title page. Spine slightly sunned, extremities a touch rubbed, minor wear to corners and spine ends, endpapers toned, light foxing to prelims and endmatter, occasional mild foxing to margins of text block, folding map with a few short splits to folds and a 4 cm long closed tear to stub. A very good copy.
HARDCOVER. 1st edition. 313pp, folding map present, frontispiece with tissue guard intact, all 9 black and white illustrations are present, decorative burgundy octavo cloth. slight cover wear, nick to head of spine, owner name and date on FFEP, spine is faded, binding is tight, interior is clean throughout, a good copy.
