Impact of irrigated agriculture in drylands. 5. Need for more rural development in Rajasthan. 6. Concluding remarks. Literature Cited. In my professional career as field biologist, I came across thousands of people with diverse background, from politicians to policy-makers, and from indigenous people to intellectuals-Harnath and Sharmishtha Jagawat do not fit into any of them. They belong to an unusual class of India's rural development practitioners. Harnath is an idealistic institutional leader, who always looks far into the future to eradicate poverty plaguing the drylands. His creativity, administrative aptitude and physical robustness brought up in the remote Chambal valley from childhood embodied with the upbeat spirit armored by his competence and genuine big-heartedness helped countless farming communities for over four decades by his tireless social work centered on irrigation water. In contrast, Sharmishtha is a down-to-earth person, who bows down to greet all humans irrespective of their age and status-from children to chief ministers, she expresses her lovely enthusiasm with genuine human touch. In this book, the author, who is Tata Visiting Chair at N M Sadguru Water and Development Foundation, highlights their enormous contributions to India's rural development eradicating poverty while revolutionizing village-level food security.

Community Irrigation Relieves Poverty. 4. Vegetable Farms Enhance Ecology and Livelihoods. Index. The farming system is considered sustainable only when productivity is maintained over a long period by enhancing the protection of natural resources with significant profitability to guarantee financial benefit to farmers. India leads the world in harboring the largest irrigated area.If India wants to improve sustainable farming practices and production, it must embark on new initiatives incorporating people, land and water with government, non-government and corporate support. In this book, the author, who is Tata Visiting Chair at NM Sadguru Water and Development Foundation, highlights the "Sadguru Model of Rural Development"in the Indian context, and how it promotes rural development at the grassroots while enhancing farming sustainability and food security. If the model highlighted in this book is adopted across the drylands of India and elsewhere, it would greatly increase agriculture output, guarantee food security, protect natural resources, and above all, wipe out poverty, which is the greatest insult to human dignity. In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: New. 2nd Edition. The Earth's thirsty and burgeoning human population is confronted today with the reality of an unchanging freshwater supply-a disparity that grows worse each year. Global water usages have increased six fold during the last century, and policymakers and politicians have met this increasing demand by building larger dams. Can these megadams solve chronic water shortages, poverty, and future food security? Proponents have argued that bigger dams are better; they increase irrigation opportunities, provide water to drought-prone areas, reduce flooding, and supply hydropower. However, opponents have found that the social costs of displacement due to dams are as dramatic as the ecological cost. Evidence from semi-arid regions of western India has shown that a more sustainable solution may be to build instead numerous check dams-small barriers using stones, cement, steel and concrete built across the direction of water flow on rivers to harvest rainwater. In this book, the author based on his research conducted at the NM Sadguru Water and Development Foundation introduces the pressing issues of water management in the drylands of India emphasizing sustainable development. This monograph highlights a variety of development issues involving water resources, lift irrigation, agriculture, floriculture, sanitation, renewable energy, and human ecology. Therefore this book should serve as an introductory, supplementary and reference text for sustainable development, natural resource management, ecology, water resource management, agriculture, renewable energy, and rural development courses in colleges, universities and other institutes of higher learning around the globe. As public attitudes toward animal welfare and ethics have changed markedly in many parts of the world it becomes imperative to update ethical and animal welfare status of zoos in Asia to the academic community and general public. This book for the first time examines the underlying causes of animal welfare problems in zoological and recreational parks throughout South East Asia and suggests scientific ways to improve professional standards. This monograph gives brief account of a variety of common problems zoos and recreational parks face in terms of ethics and welfare today. It introduces basic welfare problems and the concept of zoo assessments and how they improve welfare standards for many of the captive animals. Data on zoo animal welfare in Asia are limited to some journal articles and newspaper reports. Therefore this book should serve as an introductory supplementary and reference text for animal welfare and ethics related courses in colleges universities and other institutes of higher learning around the globe. 228 pp.

The largest is the Indian flying fox and the rarest is the Salim Ali¿s fruit bat. In 1948, naturalist Angus Hutton collected this species from the High Wavy Mountains of Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu state. But, it was misidentified as the common short-nosed fruit bat. In 1972, taxonomist Kitti Thonglongya reexamined the specimen and declared it as a new species. It was named after the renowned ornithologist, Salim Ali. This endangered species has a restricted distribution and it entered the Guinness Book of World Records in 1993 as one of the three rarest bats in the world. The author is one among a few biologists who have actually seen, studied, captured and released the Salim Ali¿s fruit bat into the wild. This book provides rare field data on the population status, ecology, behavior and conservation of fruit bats in Tamil Nadu state of India, including the highly endangered Salim Ali¿s fruit bat.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 68 pp. Englisch.

Yoga has eight critical components that include ethics, self-discipline, physical posture, breath control, sensory transcendence, mental focus, meditation and the final state of ecstasy. But, yoga seekers are attracted more towards the easier part of exercise and thus yoga has mushroomed as an economic enterprise endorsing wellness. Indiäs sages have practiced yoga over millennia. I continue my journey in those revered footsteps. Intrinsically, the essence of yoga to me is nothing but observing the arising mental thoughts so that follow-up actions result in purity-propelled excellence ensuing simplified life with nature. In this book, I have synthesized all about what nature and yoga means to me as a naturalist. By the way, yoga is an integral part of nature. Nature as such is complex as the world itself. When I internalize the yoga way of life with nature, I have become eternally free.Books on Demand GmbH, Überseering 33, 22297 Hamburg 88 pp. Englisch.
