Marc-Antoine Gaudin (1804-1880) breveta de nombreuses inventions en optique, en chimie et en mécanique. Entre 1867 et 1872, il obtient quatre fois le prix Trémont attribué aux «savants sans fortune». Avec son frère Alexis, il fut l'un des pionniers de la photographie.

Importante studio in cui questo chimico e cristallografo francese ipotizza l'esistenza di strutture molecolari tridimensionali. Tuttavia l'opera, non suffragata da consistenti prove chimiche, ebbe, ai suoi tempi,Âscarsa accoglienza. Gaudin si dedico' dapprima alla cristallografia. Utilizzando fiamme molto calde riusci' a sintetizzare per la prima volta zaffiri e rubini artificiali. Si interesso' di dagherrotipia e puo' essere infatti considerato un pioniere delle tecniche fotografiche di impressione e sviluppo. Espresse la distinzione fra atomo e molecola, individuando in quest'ultima un aggregato isolato di atomi, anche identici. Assegno' il peso atomico corretto a 23 elementi e determino', attraverso i pesi molecolari, le formule esatte di numerosi composti organici e inorganici. ITA.

The title page and first few leaves show an early dampstain and foxing; the foxing diminishes to light for the majority of the text. A very good copy. Gaudin's early and definitive manual covering every aspect of daguerreotyping including making, exposing and processing the plates, electroplating the daguerreotype plates for making reproductions, and making portraits; it also includes complete instructions for making Talbot's calotypes. This manual provides a short history of the discovery and instructions for making daguerreotypes, glass plate and paper negatives, albumen and other printing papers, and stereographs, bringing the practitioner to current usage.
