8vo in fours, pp. iv, 19; disbound. First and only edition in this format. As the title page states, this is a reprint of part of a book on Spanish America by the English dominican Thomas Gage (d. 1656), who defected to the Church of England in 1642. The English-American his Travail by sea and land, or a new survey of the West-Indias was first published in 1648, but subsequent editors excised the most violently anti-papist sections, including the present chapter which relates the story of Gage's arrival in England, and attacks Laud with all the bitter zeal of the convert. Presumably the whiggish, pro-Commonwealth tendency in England was self-confident enough by the latter years of Anne's reign to feel that this text could be safely disinterred once more.

His book, published after his return, caused a great sensation, for it was the first to give the world a description of the vast regions from which all foreigners had been jealously excluded by the Spanish authorities. The work was translated into French, Dutch, and German, but its purpose was to urge the English to seize the Spanish territories in the New World." Conway (on front pastedown) and Florencio Gavito (on front free endpaper), two renowned collectors of Spanish Americana, very good to fine copy, rare. (cgc). The 4th edition was issued twice, 1699 and this issue by Motte, in 1711. OCLC 56125 71 1 1; European-American 711/82: "Reissue of London, 1699 edn. ",' Sabin 263 02; JCB (3) 1:152; Hill 655. Gage was sent to Spain by his father in 1612 and while there, entered the Dominican order. In 1625 he left Spain and, to circumvent the order of the king of Spain preventing foreigners from entering the Spanish territories of the New World, had himself smuggled aboard a ship bound for the Philippines. He spent most of the next twelve years in Central America, at times living among the natives. He returned to England in 1641, at which time he became an Anglican priest. This work was published after his return to England; "it was the first to give the world a description of the Avast regions from which all foreigners had been jealously excluded by the Spanish authorities. It's purpose was to urge the mastery of Spanish territories in the New World by the English. "- (Hill) It was quickly translated into French, Dutch and German. An important work relating to the New World.

(W. Piper. Lateinamerika in Niedersachsen von Kolumbus zu Bolívar. Ausst.-Kat. der HAB 1985. S. 56) ? Leicht gebräunt, sonst gutes, breitandiges Exemplar. ?
