The Mikaso, the most widely acclaimed of all Gilbert and Sullivan's comic operas, was first performed at the Savoy Theatre, London, on 14 Marth, 1885. Particularly famous for his collaboration with Sir Arthur Sullivan, Sir William S. Gilbert was also renowed in his own right, excelling as a dramatist and writer of humorous verse, in particular his Bab Ballads, published between 1869 and 1873. In this facsimile reprint of Macmillan's 1928 edition of The Mikado, Gilbert's lyrics are accompanied by colour illustrations by Russell Flint, 'President of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours (1936-56), whose work is now more sought after than ever before, and black-and-white ink drawings by Charles Brock.
