Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper to the Pennsylvania commander of a national militray organization. Hardcover. xvi+ 301 pp with index, bibliography. Ilustrations. Fine in dust jacket about very good with some wear to the extremities and folds, American price clipped, UK price intact. Prize winning story of one of the more unusual characters of the Civil War, Count Adam Gurowski. A rotund man with a pronounced accent and who wore blue goggles due to an eye injury, he was known universally as "the Pole". He had varied jobs and positions in Europe and United States; during the Civil War years he had no identifable job but wandered about collecting gossip, breakling uninvited into conferences, rummaging through other people's files, and offering advice freely that was often heeded because of its amazing accuracy. One of the most radical of all Radical Republicans, he viciously attacked one and all in his writings and was feared by Lincoln as a possible assassin. This copy deaccessioned by a well-known institution founded in 1862 as a patriotic organization and in still in existance today as a private club. Our letter detailing this will be included.
