Durch Stromstärkemessung am Ductus thoracius ließ sich des weiteren zeigen, daß die Geschwindigkeit der Lymphströmung normalerweise relativ klein ist und stark von dem Ausmaß der Filtration von Plasmaflüssigkeit in das Gewebe abhängt. Auch die filtrierende Funktion der Lymphknoten, die Rolle der Lymphgefäßklappen, des Zwerchfells und allgemein der "Muskelpumpen" für den Lymphtransport wurden durch die am Leipziger Institut ausgeführten Arbeiten näher erforscht." Mit Hermann Emminghaus (1845-1904) begann eine wissenschaftlich begründete Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie. Mit seinen beiden Hauptwerken, der "Allgemeinen Psychopathologie" aus dem Jahr 1878 und "Die psychischen Störungen des Kindesalters" von 1887, setzte Hermann Emminghaus für die Allgemeine Psychiatrie und für die am Anfang stehende Psychiatrie des Entwicklungsalters zwei entscheidende Marksteine. In seiner "Allgemeinen Psychopathologie" verwendete Emminghaus als erster den Begriff "Psychopathologie". Das für die Entwicklungspsychiatrie des Kindes- und Jugendalters wegweisende Buch "Die psychischen Störungen im Kindesalter" wurde nach den Worten des angeschenen kinderpsychiatrischen Historikers Ernest Harms (1967) als der Beginn und als "Wiegenstunde" einer wissenschaftlichen Kinder- und Jugendpsychiatrie bezeichnet. An dieser Stelle sei jedoch daran erinnert, daß vor Hermann Emminghaus die Psychiater Heinrich Wilhelm Neumann und Oswald Berkhan in Deutschland und die Pädiater James Conolly, Charles West und besonders Henry Maudsley in England bedeutende Einsichten über die Phänomenologie und die Ätiologie der psychischen Störungen im Kindes- und Jugendalter vermittelt hatten, die von Hermann Emminghaus nicht nur im Literaturverzeichnis und in Eußnoten zitiert wurden, sondern mit denen er sich in seinen Texten anerkennend, aber auch kritisch auseinandersetzte. Es war jedoch die Monographie von Emminghaus, die über Jahrzehnte hinaus maßgeblich die Ätiologie, Diagnostik und Therapie der psychisch kranken Kindern und Jugendlichen bestimmte, bis sie im 20. Jahrhundert durch Lehrbücher mit den darin enthaltenen neuen Erkenntnissen von August Homburger (1926), Leo Kanner (1935), Moritz Tramer (1942), Hans Asperger (1952) und zahlreichen anderen Autoren abgelöst wurde."
