"Author was born in 1901 and in 1921 was appointed to the American Legation in Peiping - although his actual diplomatic career began in 1923 when he was named Vice-Consul at Mukden. For the next eighteen years he held various posts in many parts of China, until December 1941 - while he was American Counsul at Shanghai - when the Japanese captured the city and he was interned for several months. Named Consul General at Vancouver in 1945, he left the next year to become Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, later American Ambassador to Thailand, a post he held until his retirement in 1953. He saw China and Manchuria in chaos under the warlords.
