Red linen hardcover with stamped decoration and title in gold and black. The Celtic decoration is repeated on the back in blind-stamped form. Gilded on all edges. The spine shows heavy discolouration and the boards are a bit stained and bumped. The hinges at the front of the book are slightly loose. The contents are in good state, accept for the two loose illustrations at the end. 30,5 x 42 cm, [8] 1-49 pp. With nine full-page engravings after illustrations of Gustave Doré, all protected by tissue guard. Viviane is part of a cycle of twelve narrative poems, called Idylls of the King by the British poet Alfred Tennyson ( 1809-1892). The stories are part of the Legend of King Arthur. This story is about Viviane, also known as 'The Lady of The Lake'. Viviane learns her magic from Merlin, who falls in love with her. She refuses to give him her love until he has taught her all his secrets, after which she uses her power to trap him. This tragic love story is illustrated beautifully by Doré. B2357.
