Erstausgabe
Hardcover. First edition. Folio. Volumes I & II (of 3 published). (42),1151,(1);(22),1057,(56)pp. Double column text in Latin. Indices (in both volumes). Volume I nicely rebound in full calf in antique style circa 1850, with red morocco spine label. Volume II in original calf, worn, corners repaired, and rebacked to match the spine of Vol. I. Title pages printed in red & black. Vol. I with an added engraved title (re-margined at blank fore-edge). The 2 vols. are illustrated with 64 sharply delineated copper engraved views of ancient abbeys, monasteries, hospitals, cathedrals, and collegiate churches (4 are folding and 5 are double-page). Additionally illustrated with 14 plates of early church fathers and costumes of the various orders. Further illustrated with heraldic text woodcuts and large woodcut capitals. Each volume is complete within itself. A third volume that expanded this work was published 12 years later. Vol. I with minor worming at blank lower fore-margin of first 250 pages (text unaffected). Vol. I also has an old, faded water stain at the top blank margin and also at the lower fore-corner, the latter occasionally touching the text and a few of the plates. Vol. II is quite clean, but one plate has been closely trimmed at the fore-edge during rebinding and now lacks about 1" of a folded portion with the subsequent loss of a few letters of the engraved text, but the image is complete. A third volume (not present) was separately published in 1673.

Erstausgabe
Leather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. The first edition of Volumes I and II of William Dugdale's important history on the monasteries of England. The first edition of the first two volumes of this important work on the history of monasteries in England. The third volume was not published until 1673.Additional engraved title page to Volume I.This set is incomplete and bound without all plates.'Monasticon Anglicanum' was one of the earliest works to acknowledge the importance of charters as a primary source when consulting medieval history. In addition to this, the work uses charters as a way to understanding the feudal system, and legal possession. Dugdale highlights the wealth of the monasteries, and the importance they had in society prior to the Reformation - something that was not necessarily remembered in Elizabethan and Jacobean society. This work was the first of its scale, and inspired a new area of historical research. William Dugdale was an English antiquary and herald of the seventeenth century. He was a pioneer in medieval history as an academic subject and legitimised the study of monastic history. His 'Monasticon Anglicanum' was originally a collaboration with the English antiquary Roger Dodsworth and the first volume of this work was originally published in 1655. To this work, Dugdale described the history of various orders in England and Wales in addition to the individual monasteries. He explains the surviving foundation charters and those relating to the expansion of the monastery in addition to the known benefactions of the land made to the monastery.Volume I ESTC citation number R225645.Volume II ESTC citation number R211977. In a quarter calf binding with cloth to the boards, with renewed endpapers. Externally, smart. Some light marks to the leather. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. Light tide mark to the tail of the half-title to Volume I, offset a little to the title page. The occasional ink note to the margins. Bound without plates. Tape repairs to leaf 7P1 of Volume II. Gathering from the title page to page 1 is detaching a little to head to the gutter, evident only to the gutter of page 1. Page 1 is detached but present. Good. book.
