Massiccio del Monte Bianco, 11 febbraio 1971: il grande Rene Desmaison tenta la direttissima della Punta Walker sulle Grandes Jorasses insieme al giovane compagno, Serge Gousseault. La scelta e dovuta la fatto che la meta di partenza, lo Sperone Centrale, e gia… occupato da un'altra cordata partita un giorno prima. Di fronte si trovano 1200 metri di granito e ghiaccio strapiombanti e soggetti a continue scariche di neve e sassi. La salita e piu dura del previsto e i due devono bivaccare piu volte. Fino al 17 il tempo regge, ma poi si mette al brutto. Ormai sono a 200 metri dalla vetta, l'unica possibilita e arrivare in cima, ma i collegamenti col fondovalle e i familiari si sono interrotti, i viveri scarseggiano e Serge Gousseault tradisce i primi segni di sfinimento. Tornare indietro non e piu possibile, non resta che proseguire, uscire dalla parete: e l'inizio della fine, i bivacchi si susseguono fino all'ultimo, a 80 metri dalla meta. Gousseault non riesce piu a muoversi, e Desmaison, che ancora - non per molto - avrebbe energia sufficiente per arrivare in cima, decide di restare con il suo compagno di cordata che, infine, soccombe. Ormai a Desmaison non resta che attendere l'elicottero dei soccorsi che arrivera solo il 25 febbraio, dopo 342 ore, piu di due settimane in parete.

Reneova manzelka Simona vsak neustale bojovala za nadeji, celila byrokracii a zavisti, coz bylo casto bolestivejsi nez fyzicke prekazky. Nakonec se ji podarilo vyburcovat akci, kterou vedl jeji manzeluv pritel, pilot Alain Frebolt. Diky jeho dovednostem se podarilo pristat na miniaturni nahorni plosine, ale ani on neveril, ze by oba muze nasli zive. Kniha, napsana jako napinavy denik, vyvolava otazky o smyslu rizika a zdrave mire hazardu, ktere si kazdy ctenar musi zodpovedet.
