Trade paperback. Zustand: Good. Michelle Winkler (Graphics) (illustrator). 3rd Printing, with revisions. xix, [1], 203, [1] pages. Illustrations. Biographical Essay. Index. Small crease to title page. Father Daniel Mode is a U.S. Navy chaplain who has served in forward areas and ministered to multitudes of people in uniform. Over the course of his career so far, he has served on two aircraft carriers and has had numerous deployments, including to the Persian Gulf and Afghanistan, where he ministered to nearly 20,000 troops suffering tremendous losses. Father Mode finds inspiration in the life of another military chaplain, Father Vincent R. Capodanno, who was killed in action in Vietnam. Father Mode learned of Father Capodanno's heroism and dedication when he was a young seminarian. Deeply moved, he wrote his master's thesis on Father Capodanno, which, in 2000, was published as a book titled The Grunt Padre. Because of Father Mode's book and his advocacy, in 2006, the Church officially proclaimed Father Capodanno a Servant of God, formally initiating the process for canonization. Father Vincent Capodanno was a Maryknoll missionary, who supported the U.S. Marine Corps when they faced the threat of death on the most forward edge of the firing lines in South Vietnam. The Marines whom Father Capodanno served in Vietnam considered him one of them. When they had to hike, he hiked with them; when they carried 40 pounds on their back, he carried 40 pounds on his back; when they sweated in the heat, he sweated in the heat; and when they had to stay up at night on a listening post, he stayed up at night. They dubbed him "the Grunt Padre," a grunt being an affectionate term for Marines in the trenches. A humble man who cared for his Marines unto his own death, Father Capodanno was a hero of the faith way before he ever was a hero. Chaplains in Vietnam usually served a year. After his 12 months, Father Capodanno requested an extension and got another six months. He requested yet another extension and the letter denying this arrived after his death.
