8vo in fours, pp. [viii], 77, [2] epilogue; pagination including engraved title page; disbound. First published earlier the same year. This was a very popular play, and there are two issues of this edition: in this one the setting of sigs. A-F is different from that in the other. The marker identified by ESTC is that in this one there is a semi-colon (not a comma) after 'Clerks belonging to Stockwell' in the list of Dramatis Personae.

8vo in fours, pp. [vi], 86, [1] epilogue; possibly wanting a half title; in modern wrappers. Second edition: first published earlier the same year, and first performed in April 1804. This is one of Cumberland's later plays - his dramatic career had begun almost forty years before, with The Summer's Tale in 1765.

8vo in fours, pp. xiii, [iii], 92; cut a bit close at head; disbound. Second edition, but probably a reissue of the first. First performed at Drury Lane in December 1774. With an epilogue by David Garrick, and a long dedication addressed to 'Detraction' - evidently intended to forestall some aspects of anticipated criticism, especially of his plagiarising classical comedy - this play is said to be based on Terence's Adelphi. At one point Cumberland urges his detractor to 'try your skill upon any one of Aristophanes's comedies; take his Clouds, for instance; if you was literally in the clouds you could not be more to seek; and unless Dr. Johnson, or Mrs. Carter will take you by the hand (and how that should be I don't know) you will never get thro' the fog' (p. viii). Cumberland did in fact translate The Clouds (published 1785), but whether Johnson or Carter helped him is not recorded.

Erstausgabe
8vo in fours, pp. [iv], 92; disbound. First edition. First performed at Drury Lane in January 1778. An interestingly romantic view of the Anglo-Saxons, seeing the Norman conquest as the death of Old England: at the end Edgar Atheling takes up the ancient English standard and vows to fight on. It is alleged that Sheridan's bon mot on hearing that Cumberland would not laugh at the first night of School for Scandal - 'He ought to have laughed at my comedy, for I laughed heartily at his tragedy' - refers to this play, although the chronology would suggest otherwise.
