Erstausgabe
First edition, first impression, of this account of the assertion of British control in Burma following its annexation in 1885. "Colonial rule brought to Burmese society unprecedented changes, most of which benefited British and other foreign commercial interests at the expense of indigenous peoples" (Callahan, p. 23). The author (1835-1915) succeeded Sir Charles Bernard as chief commissioner in 1887. "Seeking to win the hearts and minds of the Burmese, one of Crosthwaite's first acts was to start repairing damaged monasteries and compensating the pongyis who had suffered. He also worked to interrupt the opium trade, restore the ruby mines and teak farming, and train Burmese for police work" (Miller, p. 95). His Village Act comprehensively reshaped the fabric of local level politics and administration, ensuring that by the 1920s the British had successfully built a modern bureaucratic state. Mary Patricia Callahan, Making Enemies: War and State Building in Burma, 2003; Stephen M. Miller, George White and the Victorian Army in India and Africa: Serving the Empire, 2020. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, bottom edge untrimmed, others trimmed. Photogravure tissue-guarded frontispiece showing a "Picket on the Chin Hills", 27 half-tone plates, 5 maps. With 1926 ownership signature of one W. R. Matson on the front pastedown and the title page; mid-century bookseller's ticket on rear pastedown. Cloth generally clean, extremities lightly rubbed, occasional foxing to contents, plates bright: a near-fine copy.
