Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. 'It is one fact, sir, that I am a widow, ' she said. 'It is another fact, that I am going to be marriedagain.'There she paused, and smiled at some thought that occurred to her. Doctor Wybrow was notfavourably impressed by her smile-there was something at once sad and cruel in it. It came slowly, and it went away suddenly. He began to doubt whether he had been wise in acting on his firstimpression. His mind reverted to the commonplace patients and the discoverable maladies that werewaiting for him, with a certain tender regret. The lady went on.'My approaching marriage, ' she said, 'has one embarrassing circumstance connected with it. Thegentleman whose wife I am to be, was engaged to another lady when he happened to meet with me, abroad: that lady, mind, being of his own blood and family, related to him as his cousin. I haveinnocently robbed her of her lover, and destroyed her prospects in life. Innocently, I say-becausehe told me nothing of his engagement until after I had accepted him. When we next met inEngland-and when there was danger, no doubt, of the affair coming to my knowledge-he toldme the truth. I was naturally indignant. He had his excuse ready; he showed me a letter from the ladyherself, releasing him from his engagement. A more noble, a more high-minded letter, I never readin my life. I cried over it-I who have no tears in me for sorrows of my own If the letter had lefthim any hope of being forgiven, I would have positively refused to marry him. But the firmness ofit-without anger, without a word of reproach, with heartfelt wishes even for his happiness-thefirmness of it, I say, left him no hope. He appealed to my compassion; he appealed to his love forme. You know what women are. I too was soft-hearted-I said, Very well: yes In a week more (Itremble as I think of it) we are to be married.'She did really tremble-she was obliged to pause and compose herself, before she could go on.The Doctor, waiting for more facts, began to fear that he stood committed to a long story. 'Forgiveme for reminding you that I have suffering persons waiting to see me, ' he said. 'The sooner you cancome to the point, the better for my patients and for me.'The strange smile-at once so sad and so cruel-showed itself again on the lady's lips. 'Everyword I have said is to the point, ' she answered. 'You will see it yourself in a moment more.'She resumed her narr.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. As the inscription on his tombstone reveals, Wilkie Collins wanted to be remembered as the "author of The Woman in White," for it was this novel that secured his reputation during his lifetime. The novel begins with a drawing teacher's eerie late-night encounter with a mysterious woman in white, and then follows his love for Laura Fairlie, a young woman who is falsely incarcerated in an asylum by her husband, Sir Percival Glyde, and his sinister accomplice, Count Fosco. This edition returns to the original text that galvanized England when it was published in serial form in All the Year Roundmagazine in 1860. Three different prefaces Collins wrote for the novel, as well as two of his essays on the book's composition, are reprinted, along with nine illustrations. The appendices include contemporary reviews, along with essays on lunacy, asylums, mesmerism, and the rights of women.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. 'This time the fiction is founded upon facts' stated Wilkie Collins in his Preface to Man and Wife (1870). Many Victorian writers responded to contemporary debates on the rights and the legal status of women, and here Collins questions the deeply inequitable marriage laws of his day. Man and Wife examines the plight of a woman who, promised marriage by one man, comes to believe that she may inadvertently have gone through a form of marriage with his friend, as recognized by the archaic laws of Scotland and Ireland. From this starting-point Collins develops a radical critique of the values and conventions of Victorian society. Collins had already developed a reputation as the master of the 'sensation novel', and Man and Wife is as fast moving and unpredictable as The Moonstone and The Woman in White. During the novel the atmosphere grows increasingly sinister as the setting moves from a country house to a London suburb and a world of confinement, plotting, and murder.…
