Before the Second World War he retired to New Zealand, and put himself at the disposal of the New Zealand Government and ended up commanding the RNZAF group in the Solomon Islands. In 1940, the publisher's issued Professor Wrenn's thorough revision of Dr. Dr. Clark Hall's translation of Beowulf. This included J.R.R. Tolkien's prefatory account of the metre of the original as well as a few textual notes by Wrenn. The present edition of this work has been brought up-to-date and considerably enlarged. Professor Wren has written a new Introduction setting forth important general matters relating to the poems, improved the translation by the correction of a few misprints, and greatly enlarged his notes. The book is bound in the original yellow boards with black titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition. There is moderate foxing to the edges which seeps a little onto the margins. Light foxing to endpapers and prelims. No inscriptions. The unclipped dust jacket has a light wear to edges and a closed 1" tear to the top of the front panel.
