Profusely illustrated throughout by the author with 82 black and white engravings, including the frontispiece. ***Very good in sea-green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine and front board. The boards show some rubbing and marks commensurate with handling over the last 130 years, with some fading to the back board. Head and tail of spine slightly frayed and rubbed. The binding is straight with no reading lean. Spine tight. Page block edges quite clean. Internally also very good with no inscriptions. Black endpapers. Tissue-guard to the frontispiece engraving foxed. Frontispiece itself not foxed. No other foxing. Pages clean.
