Erstausgabe
8vo, pp. [ii], [xii], 53, [1] blank, [4]; [iv], 152; 43; with four folding plates of music in the Reply; the two main parts bound in the wrong order (see below), but quite complete, and otherwise a fine copy, in contemporary plain calf, spine gilt with morocco label. Second edition, but substantially revised from the first edition of the previous year, and including Avison's lengthy Reply to criticism by William Hayes in his Remarks on Mr. Avison's Essay (1753). The reply also includes four engraved plates of music (numbered 1 and 3-5). This copy is in fine condition, but the main essay has been misbound after the Reply instead of coming first in the volume, and with the Reply's prelims immediately before the Essay. Charles Avison (1710?-70) was a major force in musical life in the north of England for more than thirty years: he began organising subscription concerts in Newcastle in the 1730s and introduced his audience to new music, both his own and others, during that time. He favoured the music of Geminiani over that of Handel, and the first edition of this book was heavily criticised by William Hayes of Oxford, which led to his reply, and to a revision of the original text: the first edition was a 12mo of 138pp, but this revision is longer and in 8vo. It also contains the additional Letter. on the music of the ancients, not in the earllier text. See New Grove (I pp. 748-51) for a full account of Avison's life and influence.
