First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Tudor Trevor, from the author. 18th Nov. 1868, Madras". The recipient was a fellow immigrant and director of the Madras civil orphan asylums. This work is a collection of letters, the majority of which were first published in the Madras Times between September 1866 and December 1867. Lawson was the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce in Salem, a city in the state of Tamil Nadu, and wrote these letters for the entertainment of other British citizens living in India. Uncommon institutionally, with only two copies traced on WorldCat. Riddick p. 211. Octavo. Original green cloth over bevelled boards by C. Foster, spine lettered in gilt, double rule frame blocked in blind to covers, yellow endpapers. Binder's ticket to foot of rear pastedown. Slight rubbing to extremities, top edge lightly dust toned; an excellent copy.
