The first edition of this work in a full morocco prize binding, with gold tooling to the front board, spine and square. "Science & Art Department - Queen's Prize for Art" is gold tooled to the front board. All edges gilt. A complete and comprehensive hand-book for painters, containing directions and instructions for painting a variety of subjects, such as imitation of nature and style, distinction between laws and rules, self-teaching, beauty of form, drawing, expression and composition, and much more. This is the scarce first edition of this work, written by Charles Robert Leslie, English genre painter in the nineteenth century. With numerous plates of illustrations. In a full morocco prize binding. Externally sound, though rubbed to the joints and extremities. Spine is slightly darkened. The front joint is cracked, with the hinge held fairly firmly by cords. Cracking to the head and tail of the rear joint, which is held firmly to the hinge. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with the occasional spot to the plates. The front blank and frontispiece have been amateurly adhered to the book with tape. Good Only. book.

On the reverse of the letter are pencil notes by Seligman, made while reviewing a book.
