In 8° (17,1x12,5 cm); 29, (1) pp. Senza brossura. Raro.

A Londres, 1799. In 12 de 230 pp., broché, couverture muette de l?époque. Bon exemplaire.

Gewicht in Gramm: 500.

(20,5 x 13 cm). XXII, 262 (1) S. Mit 2 gefalteten gestochenen Tafeln. Moderner Halbpergamentband. Erste Ausgabe unter diesem Titel. "First published at Dijon in 1782 as 'Essai sur les Machines en général', this new edition incorporates recent developments in the field. In the preface Carnot makes reference to Lagrange's invention of the calculus of variations and the law of least action. The 'Essai' contains Carnot's contributions to the study of machines, and marks the beginning of the great French engineering tradition in the science of machines. The 'Essai' presents the basic laws of equilibrium and movement and then applies those laws to the operation of machines. Carnot discusses geometric movement (determinable by general principles), forces of propulsion and resistance, momentum of activity and forces, and machines that operate in a continuum and hydraulic machines. The work is noted for the clarity with which it explains the formulas, yet it is not a design manual. It is a true attempt to treat machines as physical bodies" (R&T). - Gestempelt. - DSB 3, 70; Roberts & Trent S. 63.

(21 x 13,5 cm). 80 S. Mit 1 gefalteten Kupfertafel. Moderner Pappband im Stil der Zeit, unbeschnitten. Erste Ausgabe. - "In 1784 the Academy of Berlin invited entries in a competition for a 'clear and precise' justification of the infinitesimal calculus. The essay that Carnot submitted forms the basis of the 'Réflexions.' that he published many years later, in 1797. His book frankly acknowledged the difficulties that infinitesimal analysis raises for common sense, and although it was reserved to the reforms initiated by Cauchy, Bolzano, and Gauss to put the calculus on a rigorous footing, Carnot's justification evidently answered for well over a century to the needs of a public that wished to understand its own use of the calculus. The genius of the infinitesimal calculus, in Carnot's account, lay in its capacity to compensate in its own procedures for errors that it deliberately admitted into the process of computation for the purpose of facilitating a solution" (DSB).

Lazare Nicolas Marguerite, Comte Carnot (1753-1823), "Le Grand Carnot", French mathematician and engineer, general and a politician, Minister of War in 1800 and Minister of Internal Affairs during the Hundred Days. In 1815 he was made Count of the French Empire by Napoleon. Carnot favoured fortresses and defensive strategies. The Encyclopaedia Britannica (11th edition, 1910) has described his "Mémoire sur la fortification primitive" as "One of the more important works on the subject of fortification and siege war", and the book has been listed as such together with the works of the great fortification theoreticians Dürer, de Ville, Coehoorn, Vauban, Noizet, as well as the later writers Plessix and Legrand, Ritter von Brunner, and Delambre.
