HARDCOVER. Zustand: GOOD. 1862. Harper and Bro. American. Hard Cover. Book - Good, half leather bound to marbled boards, minor wear to extremities. A very early compendium of novels. This book contains four novels: 1. STRANGE STORY: A NOVEL by Sir E. Bulwer Lytton, (a novel about love, life, and occult powers) 2. JOHN HALIFAX By Charlotte Bronte; 3. VILLETTE by Charlotte Bronte; 4. SIR JASPER CAREW KNT by Charles Lever. This series of compendiums (about 400 of them) were famous in their day and very popular. The chosen novels were picked up from magazines, pamphlets and booklets, etc, in their earliest forms. They were printed and bound (piracy?) by Harpers BUT this was perfectly legally in those years before copyright agreements were enforced (about 1890)! This volume is a particularly good example being leather bound.
