A 1749 edition by the French author François Bruys on 'the art of knowing women'. In this work, Bruys discusses the education of girls, the religion and devotion of women, the effects on them of love, continence and chastity, marriage, spirit, beauty and fashion, lying and flattery, friendship, avarice, pride, and anger. Bruys is particularly focused on the female vices, and his representation of women is not exactly positive. Also included in the volume is a dissertation on adultery.Includes various manuscript annotations: "Vente de Livres, Salle Van Dyck, De Tavernier (Amateur bruxellois) 10/12 Avril 1922" (on verso of first front endleaf) and two passages copied from reference works.Women - French - adultery - gender - stereotyping - women's representation - view of women Bound in leather, 16.7 x 10 cm.
