In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. One of the greatest civil engineers of all time, Isambard Kingdom Brunel is renowned for his innovative and enduring creations. This intimate account of his life, written by his son, records his most famous achievements, including the dangerous work on the Thames Tunnel, now part of the London Underground, which almost cost him his life. However, it was his work on the Great Western Railway and the development of screw-propulsion, culminating in the building of the Great Britain, the world's first propeller-driven ship, that have become his lasting contributions to modern engineering. The construction of steamships was his great passion, and he crowned his career with the largest steamship ever built, the Great Eastern. Tragically, it was the stresses attendant upon the building of this ship which led to his declining health and ultimately, his death shortly before her maiden voyage. Brunel's legacy continues to impact upon the modern world, from the East London Tube Line to the majestic span of the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Offering an account of Isambard Kingdom Brunel's life, this book records his most famous achievements and illustrates a man who was utterly dedicated to his calling and whose legacy continues to have an impact in the world. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den Warenkorb8vo, pp. vii, [1], 472; numerous wood-engraved illustrations in text by George Cruikshank; a very good copy, uncut in publisher's buckram boards, rebacked in cloth and subsequently reinforced with tape, later printed paper label to spine, sewn on 2 sunken cords; lightly bumped at corners, cloth a little bubbled; ticket of William Wilson of Edinburgh to upper pastedown, armorial bookplate of William Scott Kerr of Chatto.First edition of the first of Youatt's animal treatises. Established in practice with Delabere Blaine, William Youatt (1776-1847) was on similarly poor terms with the Veterinary College, leaving his mature studies there without a certificate. A leading reformer among veterinary surgeons of the 1820s, he opposed the College's focus solely on the horse and agreed in 1830 to write handbooks on various farm-animals for the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge, of which five titles would be published by the time of the author's death. Of these, the present work was the most successful, reaching at least seven editions by 1866. Keen to raise the status of veterinary medicine, Youatt was instrumental in developing the field as a university discipline. In 1828 he began lecturing to students at his practice, a rival to the Veterinary College, and from 1831 delivered lectures at London University (now University College). His work led to the foundation of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, incorporated by royal charter in 1844. The treatise on draught, though not acknowledged until later editions, is the work of the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel (1806-1859) and includes a passage on the efficiency of railways, as demonstrated on the horse-driven Surrey iron railway. Cf. Dingley 697 (1837 edition); not in Mellon.

In den WarenkorbFive tracts in one volume. Dropped-head titles. Octavo, variously pp., 17, 31, 34, 82, 22. Pebbled racing-green cloth, title gilt to red leather book label to spine. Ownership inscription of 'H. T. Rendell, 1900' to front free paste-down. Light water damage to upper board, and to margin of first 4 leaves, corners bumped, spine-tips wearing. Very occasional light and scattered foxing internally. Overall, a very good copy. A series of reports by eminent railway engineers, on the opening of the Great Western Railway, which first ran trains in 1838. The parts within discuss, in some depth, Brunel's choice to use broad gauge rails, and include tables reporting on the performance of different locomotives, the cost of running trains, and both the financial and engineering considerations made in the design and construction of the GWR. Within the reports, the authors reproduce correspondence from other railway engineers, including George Smith and Robert Stephenson. The former owner of this copy, H. T. Rendell was himself a locomotive engineer for the Great Western Railway (Institute of Mechanical Engineers: IME/7/32/1/196). A comprehensive and fascinating record of the engineering challenges behind the establishment of one of England's great railway lines. Rare, COPAC locates 2 copies only with all 5 parts, at the British Library and the National Railway Museum.

In den Warenkorb19 lines in black ink on recto only of 2pp 4to. Numbered '478' in ms. in upper margin, and similarly '306' in left margin; presumably figures denoting the letter's position in a secretarial ledger. A fascinating letter from Brunel to one of his contractors, written just months before the first trains ran on the opening sections of the Great Western Railway. Early in 1838, the company of civil engineer Hugh McIntosh had stepped in to complete a contract, after the previous contractor, William Ranger, had gone bankrupt. This letter sets quite an ominous tone, showing that Brunel was not averse to withholding payment when it suited the company. 'The suggestion to your son [David McIntosh] was not that settlement of the accounts. should be made dependent on the completion of the works. but as the works [on another contract] were likely to be completed soon it might be desirable to go into the two accounts at the same time'. Brunel seems to be exploiting some ambiguous wording in a contract, in order to hold off settling an account until a second tranche of work has also been completed. Brunel shows himself well versed in double-speak, reassuring McIntosh, who must have been wondering where the next paycheque was coming from, 'The suggestion was made with regard to your advantage, as much as to that of the company'. Disputes over payment were not unusual between contractors and the Great Western Railway. When these arose, the company deferred to its chief engineer Brunel, who was certainly a compromised arbitrator and invariably found in favour of the railway. This included withholding money for overrunning contracts (often the result of Brunel unexpectedly altering plans), which meant that by 1840 around £100,000 was still outstanding to the McIntoshes. Although Hugh McIntosh died in 1840, his son David was advised to sue the GWR, which under advice from Brunel himself chose to fight the case. The painfully slow workings of the Court of Chancery ensured the case was not concluded until 1865, some five years after Brunel's death. In a ruling that nearly bankrupted the railway, the Lord Chancellor found in favour of the McIntoshes, awarding them their £100,000, plus costs and interest.
