First edition of this finely illustrated historical account of the city of Delft. Based upon Beschryving der Stadt Delft (1667), by Dirck van Bleyswijk (1639-1681) and drawing upon archival records reaching back to the fourteenth century, the present work was compiled by the bookseller and Delft town printer Reinier Boitet, with the aid of Hugo van Heussen and Hendrik van Ryn, among others. The magnificent suite of plates documents the changing times: Two maps provide a comparison of the city plan between 1560 and the early eighteenth century, along with a magnificent panoramic view engraved by C. Decker after J. Verkolje, with a legend noting 36 points of interest; the Old Church of Saint Hyppolytus and the New Church of Saint Ursula; the former Armory of Holland as it appeared in 1667 and the New Armory constructed in 1692. Fifteen large plates, most engraved by C. Decker after drawings by Pr. Smith, offer double-suite views of various commerical and cultural points-of-interest, all of which are accompanied by a full description in the text: the Raadhuis; the tombs of Maerten Tromp, Pieter Heyn, and William of Orange; the Guest House church; the former cloisters of the French church of Saint Agatha; the Plague House; several armories; the anatomical theater, the fish- and meat markets; the East India Company headquarters; the gun powder supply depot; the horse market, and the Waterslootsche Port.
