First edition. 8vo. 138, [2] pp., with twelve black and white photographic illustrations. Original green cloth, spine lettered in silver, top edge in green, dust jacket (internally clean and unmarked; small amount of marking to rear panel of jacket, otherwise a near fine copy. London, George Allen and Unwin Ltd. 'The LSE had been founded by the Webbs in the 1890s as a college of London University, and had been closely involved in the Edwardian national efficiency movement. In 1919 it was still a small college, catering mainly for part-time students, but Sidney Webb was convinced that the time was ripe for expansion in all areas of the social sciences. He looked to Beveridge as an ambitious and imaginative administrator to be the dynamo for that expansion. Over the next eighteen years Beveridge devoted himself to raising massive funds from such bodies as the Rockefeller Foundation, to a large-scale building programme, and to attracting a range of distinguished scholars in all branches of the social sciences?Tawney, H. J. Laski, L. T. Hobhouse, L. C. Robbins, F. A. Hayek, and Bronislaw Malinowski, to name but a few. By the early 1930s the LSE was recognized as one of the world's leading centres of the social sciences, and Beveridge himself was seen as mainly responsible for its prodigious growth' (ODNB).

Group of 9 booklets and magazines issued by several federalist organisations, including: "United Europe: News-Letter of the United Europe Movement" (No.1, 1947), with a foreword by Winston Churchill; "Lord Beveridge for World Government" (1950); "Peoples' World Convention 1950-55 - The Plan in Outline" (Crusade for World Government, 1950); "Federate or Perish" (Federal Union, c.1949); two issues of "Federal News" (1947 & 1948); an issue of "Humanity: Journal Of World Government Progress" (September 1950); and others. All in original stapled wrappers. Also 11 leaflets and documents issued by the same organisations including advertising for events (for example,"Unite for World Government! Mass Meeting", Westminster, November 1948) and speeches and statements of policy (such as "Korean Dispute - Statement by the Crusade for World Government" and "Outline - The Commonwealth of World Citizens - Not to be issued to the press"). As well as 10 letters (two manuscript, the rest typed), some with enclosures, regarding meetings, organisation, and policy, and two draft posters for the Federal Union hand-drawn in pencil. The condition of the booklets and magazines is largely near fine, with just a little rusting to staples and rubbing to extremities. The leaflets and letters are generally in very good order with a few folds and occasional spotting. (30+). A scarce collection of materials relating to the activities of the various federalist organisations which sprang up in the late 1940s. Following the death and destruction of the Second World War, and with the beginnings of a Cold War underpinned by the looming threat of atomic weapons, the federalists hoped to lay the ground for a safer, more peaceful and co-operative world. This, they envisaged, would be based upon the creation of new shared liberal, democratic political institutions at both a continental and global level. Such ideas were popular across the political spectrum, with leading figures including Winston Churchill and William Beveridge lending their support, and eventually feeding into creation of the European Union. One of the most commonly repeated slogans from the present literature well surmises their aims: "Those who want peace no longer prepare for war - they prepare for federal government". Several of the letters are addressed to, or written by, Jon Wynne-Tyson, the author, publisher and humanitarian activist. An unusual group containing several titles seldom encountered in either commerce or institutional holdings. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.
