Er berichtet über seine Ankunft in Melbourne, seine Reisen in Victoria, Tasmanien und New South Wales, schreibt über die Goldminen in Viktoria sowie über Krokodil- und Nashornjagden in Java u.beschreibt den Lebensstil und die Trachten der Fürsten u.des Adels auf Java. In Siam erzählt er von seltsamen Zeremonien einschließlich der Verbrennungsriten des Königs. - 1867 erschienen die ersten beide Bände und hatten einen enormen Erfolg. Erst 1872 veröffentlichte er den 3.Band, in dem er außergewöhnliche Details über China und Japan aufzeigt.
