Di Lucca, cresciuta in precarie condizioni finanziarie e avviata alla professione di danzatrice, «si raccontava che in teatro, durante gli intervalli, leggesse Dante» [DBI V]; divenne poetessa esibendosi nelle improvvisazioni - che consistevano nell'elaborare in rima qualsiasi argomento proposto dai presenti, dietro pagamento di una somma - e fu acerrima nemica del movimento romantico (cfr. E. Castreca Brunetti, Aggiunte alla Biblioteca femminile italiana, Roma 1844). --- 1) La morte d'Adone. Prima edizione della prima opera della poetessa, pubblicata a spese del conte Savioli che devolvendo ogni incasso in favore dell'autrice, le permise di abbandonare la danza e dedicarsi all'attività di improvvisatrice. Bound in publisher's pasteboard decorated in tortoise shell patterns ("carta tartarugata"), with printed paper labels on spines. Pages bright, fresh, and untrimmed. Binding somewhat abraded along joints, with some slight separation at tail of volume 1. Remarkably well-preserved set in unsophisticated state. Teresa Bandettini (1763-1837) filled salons and ballrooms all over Northern Italy performing improvisational poetry, sometimes accompanied by dance, adorned in clothing deemed "Grecian." She worked as a street performer first, gathering crowds, and reciting extemporaneous poetry on any subject that someone would call out, then passing the hat. Self-educated, she became admired for her erudition. (The so-called "improvvisatori" in Italy fascinated the expatriated English Romantics, and were pursued by them.) In addition to her improvised verse, Bandettini composed several structured pieces, including this romance epic in octaves on the adventures of Theseus and the foundation of Athens. While Bandettini's work has been largely ignored by the curriculum, we understand that she overcame debilitating personal circumstances and oppressive class and gender origins to achieve her celebrity. Angelika Kauffmann painted her portrait. The Duke of Modena (and other wealthy patrons) housed her and supported her literary career. Antoine Saliceti, Napoleon's chief administrator in Northern Italy, underwrote La Teseide. (He said that he pitied posterity for not being alive to hear her perform.) Bandettini's name resurfaced in 2002 with the discovery of six lost sonatas dedicated to her by the young Niccolò Paganini. The printer, Luigi Mussi, was Bodoni's star student during the 1790s. Mussi set up his own shop in Parma in 1803, carving a typeface and using page design that closely resembles Bodoni's.

Epithalamion by the celebrated improvisational poet, Teresa Bandettini, who packed theaters and thrilled audiences with her spontaneous verses accompanied by dance. The marriage--between the 62-year-old Prince Maximilian of Saxony and the 23-year-old Maria Luisa Carlotta--took place in Lucca by proxy without the bride being present! (They had a second ceremony in person in Dresden later that year.) Max had been Luisa Carlotta's uncle by marriage. Anyway, the important thing here is the poetry of Teresa Bandettini, who had returned to her native Lucca after a career on the road as an improvvisatrice. The poem is a hymn to Hymen, the Greek deity associated with marriage and, of course, the wedding night.

At age 27, wildly famous for her remarkable performances of improvised poetry and dance, Teresa Bandettini published this narrative poem about love, jealousy, and grief. This work, and others to follow, betrayed the author's ambition to exceed her career as an "improvvisatrice" and compose written poetry. Indeed, Bandettini was a driven artist. She was orphaned at age seven and she grew up in miserable circumstances. At age 15, she was sent off with a dance company, and there she discovered her talent for composing well-shaped poetry spontaneously while dancing. She craved an education, spending her down time reading and studying classical languages (Eventually she studied with some of the most revered professors of the age.) Perhaps she was stung by some of the adverse criticism aimed at her and other improvising poets, that the stuff was enchanting in the moment but thin if written down. Whatever the reason, she took it upon herself to write The Death of Adonis in four cantos of epic eight-line stanzas. We know the poem was reviewed for publication and perhaps retouched by Ludovico Savioli (1729-1804), a respected academic poet of the day and chair of the history department at the University of Bologna. Savioli is no doubt the unnamed "friend" to whom Bandettini dedicates the book in the preface. The publication was a success. It was even set to music by Ferdinando Paer, but never so performed. It is gracefully illustrated with four full-page narrative scenes and four half-page vignettes by Rosaspina, and an engraved roundel on the title page.
