Ayer's inaugural lecture as Grote Professor of the Philosophy of Mind and Logic at University College, London. Ayer would never reprint the article, mainly because he thought it owed too much to Gilbert Ryle, to whom it is dedicated.

First edition. 8vo. 26, [2] pp. Original printed wrappers with integral turn-in folds, wire-stitched as issued. A near fine copy. London, The Athlone Press. Ayer's lecture 'asks why the social sciences have failed to achieve the apparent success of the natural sciences. Ayer?s conclusion is relatively modest: the fact that human action has a social meaning does not rule out the type of determinism that would allow scientific explanation of human behaviour' (The Oxford Handbook of Analytic Philosophy, p. 810).

London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson. A highly accessible work on philosophy by the British analytical philosopher A.J. Ayer, best-known for popularising the logical positivism of the Vienna Circle in the English-speaking world. 'Among the topics which the books covers are those of the nature of philosophy, the varieties of philosophical analysis, the theory of knowledge, the status of physical objects, the relations between body and mind, the character of scientific explanation, theory of probability, the elements of logics, and the claims of theology' (from the dust jacket blurb).

First edition. 8vo. vii, [1], 272 pp. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, dust jacket. A near fine copy. London, Macmillan & Co. Ltd. A collection of nine essays, on topics ranging from private experience, personal identity, mind-body relations, philosophy of language, causality and epistemology. Four of which had not been previously published. In his the first essay, on Philosophy and Language, he marks out the good philosopher as one which eschews an 'over-dose of common sense', setting the tone for his oppositional approach to his philosophical predecessors, rather than working alongside them, in particular against Wittgenstein's private language argument.

Hardcover. Zustand: g. First edition. Octavo. 254pp. Original blue cloth with gold lettering and printer's device on spine. This book defines, explains, and argues for the verification principle of logical positivism, sometimes referred to as the "criterion of significance" or "criterion of meaning". It explains how the principle of verifiability may be applied to the problems of philosophy. This essential work was crucial in bringing some of the ideas of the Vienna Circle and the logical empiricists to the attention of the English-speaking world. Moderate age wear on binding with spine age toned and slight rubbing along edges. Minor offsetting on endpapers. Slight age toning along paper margin. Binding in overall good- to good, interior in good+ to very good condition.
London, Victor Gollanoz, 1936. 8vo. Orig. blue full cloth w. gilt lettering on spine. Spine a bit soiled, otherwise nice and clean, also internally. Rare first edition of Ayer's most important and well known work, in which he presents his Verification Principle, which defines a sentence as being meaningful if, and only if, is has a verifiable empirical import. He began writing the book at the young age of 24, and two years later it was published. Ayer is considered a clear and stringent writer. "Ayer's philosophical ideas were deeply influenced by those of the Vienna Circle and David Hume. His clear, stringent and polemical exposition of them makes "Language, Truth and Logic" essential reading on the tenets of Logical Positivism -- the book is regarded as a classic of 20th century analytic philosophy, and is widely read in philosophy courses around the world." (Wikipedia). The great logical positivist, Sir Alfred Jules Ayer (1910-89), was Grote Professor of Philosophy of Mind and Logic at the University College London from 1946 till 1959, and afterwards he became Wykeham Professor of Logic at the University of Oxford.

Price of 10s. 6d. net on the front flap of the jacket. Slater 28. A.J. Ayer's third book, an exploration of the philosophy of metaphysics and epistemology. He discusses problems like the nature of the reality of the external world, how sense data relates to material things, causality, and how an individual can have knowledge of other minds. Ayer was an important figure in the movement of Logical Positivism, and a significant analytic philosopher. His contributions to epistemology and metaphysics remain critical in the literature of analytic philosophy. Slightly askew with a touch of warping to the front board; jacket shows a few traces of edge wear, toning, and a few small spots of discoloration to the rear panel.
