Imperial folio, 10 pages plus an additional colour pictorial title page, 60 colour plates each with (at least) one leaf of descriptive text, and facsimile covers of the original ten parts. The leaflet of 'Notes on the production' of the work, originally loosely inserted, is now attached to the front free endpaper with a small piece of paper tape (pulling away a little). The detailed notes relate to eight plates, and are prefaced by the following: 'In the preparation of this facsimile volume minor typographical inconsistencies in the original have not been corrected. The following notes are given so the purchasers may know that what may seem to be mistakes are in fact faithful reproductions from the original volume'. Half gilt-decorated morocco and marbled papered boards, top edge gilt; leather lightly scuffed; papered boards lightly rubbed along the edges; leading edge lightly fingermarked; a very good copy (internally in excellent condition). One of 1000 copies of this high-quality facsimile. The illustrations comprise views of the fledgling city of Adelaide and outlying settlements, the topography, flora and fauna, and the Indigenous people and their lives. Some 22 of the 60 plates (and the accompanying leaves of text) are devoted exclusively to the region's Aborigines; there are numerous portraits (usually four or more to a page), plus groups of artefacts and scenes of daily life from different areas. Aborigines are depicted incidentally on the pictorial title page and in a further five plates.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. First Edition. London, Thomas M'Lean, 1847. Imperial folio, [12] pages, comprising a superb hand-coloured pictorial lithographed title page dated 1846 (verso blank); letterpress title page dated 1847 (verso blank); lithographed dedication (verso blank); Preface; 'General Remarks on the Aboriginal Inhabitants of South Australia' (3 pages); 'Subscribers to South Australia Illustrated' (2 pages, with 243 copies accounted for), plus 60 hand-coloured lithographs, each with accompanying descriptive letterpress (usually one leaf, occasionally more). Contemporary (if not original) half dark green morocco and matching cloth, the spine lettered and ruled in gilt, the front cover lettered in gilt; leather lightly worn at the corner tips, with the corner pieces slightly marked with minor surface loss; surface cracks to both joints, a little more pronounced on the front joint; slight damage to a small section of the front joint near the title; cloth slightly scuffed and marked; slight surface loss to silverfish to the marbled free endpapers, with a crease to the top corner of the front one; old conservation work to three leaves (the leading edge of the pictorial title leaf is neatly stabilised with a thin strip of tissue paper; ditto the leading and top edges of Plate 33, with tiny pieces of infill, and some short sealed tears to the top edge, well clear of the illustration; the lithographed dedication leaf has a vertical crease right of centre, and two short sealed tears to the leading edge); inconspicuous tiny tears to the edges of six leaves recently sealed; scattered foxing throughout, affecting most leaves of text and the plates (of the latter, 10 are moderately foxed; 20 have light to moderate foxing; 20 have minimal to light foxing; and 10 are unfoxed); overall, this is still a very appealing copy, foxing notwithstanding - and we have more than compensated for that when it came to determining a price . The book is housed in a later plain Solander box; albeit more functional than decorative, it has certainly been up to the task of protecting the valuable contents. '"South Australia Illustrated" is without question Angas's greatest and most accomplished work. His views of towns and scenery, of the Aborigines and of the flora and fauna offer an outstanding - if romantic - interpretation of the Australian landscape. It is a very scarce book . and one which has always been held in the highest esteem and is in great demand. It must be considered one of the fundamental works in any collection of Australian plate books' (Wantrup: 'Australian Rare Books, 1788-1900', second edition, 2023).

Erstausgabe
First edition of this superb work, the outcome of two years spent by this talented artist in South Africa. Tooley describes it, along with Angas's books on Australia and New Zealand, as being among "the most important of the illustrated travel books of their period"; this being the scarcest of the three. The widely travelled Angas (1822-1886) learnt drawing under the natural history artist Waterhouse Hawkins and later studied anatomical drawing and lithography in London. In his introduction he writes "I have had more real enjoyment of existence. during the many months I have passed amongst K****s and New Zealanders, than I ever had amid the anxieties and conventionalities of a more refined life" and ODNB notes that "his sympathy with the people he met on his travels and his enjoyment of unfamiliar scenery are evident from his paintings, which have been admired and collected, particularly in Australia". The plates include outstanding portraits, particularly of the Zulu and their monarch Mpande kaSenzangakhona(1798-1872), father of Cetshwayo, who negotiated a treaty with the British that defined borders in Natal and Zululand and reached an accommodation with the Boers. Among the many fine landscapes are views of Cape Town, Hottentot Holland, Somerset West, and Durban. The dedicatee is Sir Harry Smith, governor of the Cape of Good Hope, a veteran of the Peninsula, Waterloo, and the Anglo-Sikh Wars; Ladysmith was named after his Spanish wife, Juana, Lady Smith. Abbey 339; Colas 134; Mendelssohn I, p45; Tooley 60. Folio (540 x 358 mm). Contemporary red half morocco-grain skiver sometime neatly rebacked with the original decorative gilt spine laid down, sides and corners edged with a blind milled roll and gilt paired fillets, red straight-grain cloth sides, gilt edges, French Curl pattern marbled endpapers, red cloth inner hinges, endleaves renewed. Fine lithographic portrait frontispiece of the author by Charles Baugniet, on india paper mounted, 30 tissue-guarded hand-coloured lithographic plates heightened with gum Arabic, after Angas, drawn on stone by Angas, J. Needham, A. Laby, B. W. Hawkins, or W. Wing, printed by Charles Lovell, M. & N. Hanhart, Hullmandel & Walton; wood-engraved illustrations in the text. Bindings just a little rubbed, contents sometime professionally cleaned. A very good copy.
