An English translation was first published in 1916, and the editors note that "Much of the importance of the present work rests on the numerous historical documents which have been revealed in recent years, and which have been added as appendices. It may not be too much to assert that they are as important as the Memorial itself for the additional light which they shed on New Mexico and mission work on the northern border before 1634." Ex-libris Frederick Webb Hodge, with his bookplate on the front pastedown. Frederick Webb Hodge (1864-1956) was an prominent American editor, anthropologist, archaeologist, and historian. He served as editor of "American Anthropologist," 1898-1917 and worked at the Smithsonian Institution from 1901 to 1918, primarily at the Bureau of American Ethnology. Subsequently he became editor and assistant director at the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, in New York City. In addition, Hodge participated in excavations at the Nacoochee Mound near Helen, Georgia, directed the excavations of the ruins of Hawikkuh, near Zuni Pueblo, during the period 1917-23, and was associated with Columbia University, Hemenway Southwestern Archaeological Expedition, and the U.S. Geological Survey. Portuguese Franciscan missionary Father Alonso de Benavides served as the director of the New Mexico missions from 1626 to 1629. He is known for his memorials, which comprise some of the principal sources for Southwest history.

This important work, edited by Mrs. Edward Ayer, translates the memorial of Franciscan Alonso Benavides, the best account of early 17th-century New Mexico. Extensive notes by Charles F. Lummis and Frederick Webb Hodge supplement the narrative. Of the greatest interest, however, are the extraordinary gravure illustrations from photographs by Adam Clark Vroman and Charles F. Lummis. These show Indian sites and churches - or ruins of churches - in New Mexico, as well as New Mexico landscape. Beautifully printed by the firm of John Andrew & Son of Chicago, they are an overlooked photographic treasure trove from two notable 20th-century photographers of New Mexico.
