Hardcover. 1st edition, 3rd printing, Feb 1948 (1st printing was June 1947). Original publisher's boards 12mo, ix 253 pages. First Edition of The Diary of a Young Girl, a book which continues to hold its place at the top of many literary lists: the most famous diary of modern times, the most famous work by a teenager, most famous work on the Holocaust, most famous 20th Century work by a Jew. Primo Levi suggested that Anne Frank is frequently identified as a single representative of the millions of people who suffered and died as she did because "One single Anne Frank moves us more than the countless others who suffered just as she did but whose faces have remained in the shadows. Perhaps it is better that way; if we were capable of taking in all the suffering of all those people, we would not be able to live. " Otto Frank, Anne's father spent the remainder of his life after publication of the Diary as custodian of his daughter's legacy, saying, "It's a strange role. In the normal family relationship, it is the child of the famous parent who has the honor and the burden of continuing the task. In my case the role is reversed. " He recalled his publisher's explaining why he thought the diary has been so widely read, with the comment, "he said that the diary encompasses so many areas of life that each reader can find something that moves him personally. " Simon Wiesenthal expressed a similar sentiment when he said that the diary had raised more widespread awareness of the Holocaust than had been achieved during the Nuremberg Trials, because "people identified with this child. This was the impact of the Holocaust, this was a family like my family, like your family and so you could understand this" (Wikipedia). Spine slightly cocked (slanted) as usually found, old damp stains and very slight separating at spine, Good Condition thus (kh-2-4A).

"Two large editions having been exhausted since this work was first published, and another demanded, the author has thoroughly revised, corrected and enlarged the present edition" (Preface to Third Edition, iii). This copy has the nineteenth-century bookseller's ticket on the front pastedown of James B. Dodge, self-described in contemporary adverts as "Law Bookseller". It was owned by Dr. Eli Allen Wood (1836-1894), was eminent physician, surgeon, state senator, prolific medical writer, sometime President of the Pennsylvania Medical Society, as well as author of libretti for contemporary opera, who in 1871 inscribed this copy no doubt while living in Birmingham, Pennsylvania; and the attorney Nicholas Goshorn Ayres (1848-1918), who inscribed the half-title in 1902. All three lived in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, so there is much geographical cohesion to the provenance as well.

Moderate rubbing to extremities. Corners lightly bumped. Light toning and moderate foxing to interior, offsetting to margins of endleaves. $150. * Third Edition, Greatly Enlarged and Revised Throughout from the Last English Edition. This treatise was first published in London in 1834 by English barrister John William Smith and went through several English and American editions and issues. It became a standard reference work on commercial law in both England and America and saw numerous editions throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The American editors were: James P. Holcombe, a law professor at the University of Virginia and a legal author, Holcombe was a Confederate politician and diplomat during the American Civil War and William Y. Gholson, a lawyer and judge who practiced law in Ohio and later served on the Ohio Supreme Court. This 1861 edition, was published in New York during the Civil War, and was "greatly enlarged and revised" to reflect American legal practices, incorporating significant annotations to adapt the English source material for the U.S. legal system. The editors' affiliations with different sides of the war (Holcombe, a Confederate; Gholson, an anti-slavery advocate) highlight the complex political climate in which the work was published. First published in Livorno in 1764 as Dei Delitti e Delle Pene, this landmark work is, to quote Printing and the Mind of Man, "one of the most influential books in the whole history of criminology. It is significant because it was the first systematic study of the subject. Infused with the spirit of the Enlightenment, its advocacy of crime prevention and the abolition of torture and capital punishment marked a significant advance in criminological thought, which had changed little since the Middle Ages. It had a profound influence on the development of criminal law. It was especially influential among American thinkers, such as Thomas Jefferson, who wished to use Beccaria to reform the system of criminal law Americans inherited from England. The first two American editions were issued Charleston in 1777 and Philadelphia in 1778. Printing and the Mind of Man 209. Sowerby, Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson 2349. Hickes was a bishop of the nonjuring Church of England in Scotland. A work on propaganda commissioned by his superior in Scotland, John Maitland, Duke of Lauderdale, Ravillac Redivivus is an account of the trial of the Scots-nationalist Presbyterian (Covenanter) James Mitchell [d.1678] for an attempt to assassinate James Sharpe, the archbishop of St Andrews. Hickes linked Mitchell's story to that of the notorious covenanter Major Thomas Weir [c. 1600-1670], a suspected sorcerer who was executed for bestiality and incest in 1670, in order to demonstrate that fanatical dissenters violated the boundaries of moral law and were capable of committing the most outrageous crimes in the name of religion. First published in 1678, the work was reprinted in Dublin in 1679, followed by our second edition. A manuscript annotation at the foot of the title page, which identifies the author, reads: "The author calls himself a Scots Addvocate: (p. 46). I rather think him an English Man, probably Dr. Hicks, at that time Chaplane to the Duke of Lauderdale." English Short-Title Catalogue R19059.
