The festival of India is a major event a unique cooperative effort between the Governments of India and the United States designed to bring a greater understanding of the complex life and culture of India to the American people. This will be accomplished through an unprecedented range and variety of exhibitions and performances to take place throughout the United States in 1985 and 1986. Festival of India the official book of the festival is a remarkable achievement presenting in the volume choice selections of illustrations and text from the exhibitions organized by more than 35 museums for the Festival of India. With 223 illustrations 204 in color Festival of India is a visual delight portraying the entire panorama of cultural development in India from early sculptures to modern day terracotta from ancient religious images to handmade toys for children from the splendor of the 16th and 17th century courts to the bustle and color of Indians at fairs from the finely wrought miniatures of the Mughal era to contemporary Indian painting. Seen together these varied images create a spectacular sense of the richness and diversity of the Indian nation and its people. Much of the material is on loan from India and has never been seen before in this country. An evocative foreword by Pupul Jayakar Chairman Indian Advisory Committee Festival of India explains the ancient Indian tradition of traveling to learn a tradition that the festival beautifully embodies. A short essay written by the exhibition's curator or a prominent scholar in the field accompanies the illustrations from each institution. Another section spotlights the Indian performing artists and the musical theatrical and film events that will travel to the United States as part of the festival. More than a record of a once in a lifetime event Festival of India also serves as a splendid introduction to the fascinating culture of the world's largest and least understood democracy India.
