Zustand: Very good. - A slip of cream-colored paper, 2-5/8 inches high by 7 inches wide, is inscribed and signed in black ink: "With all good wishes / John Howard Lawson". There is light offsetting to the right side of the paper where a small piece of tape adheres to the verso. There are 2 very light vertical creases where the paper was once folded. Very good. John Howard Lawson [1894-1977] was an American writer who for several years was head of the Hollywood division of the Communist Party USA. He was also the organization's cultural manager and answered directly to V. J. Jerome, the party's New York-based cultural chief. He was the first president of the Writers Guild of America, West after the Screen Writers Guild split into two regional organizations. During the McCarthy era in the 1950s, Lawson was one of the Hollywood Ten, the first group of American film industry professionals to be blacklisted.

A 1950s receipt from the Shanghai Old Bookstore, showing the date of transaction, category of the book, number of book, price of the book and cashier's surname. The bookstore's stamp in the centre, a serial number of the receipt upper right section. Text in Chinese. Sheet measures 7.8 x 9.6cm. ???????? "Shanghai Book Publishing Company" was established in 1954. In late 1950s, the company was reconstructed. The new books section was merged into Xinhua Bookstore and Foreign Language Bookstore. The secondhand books or rare books section set up a new business called ?????? "Shanghai Old and Rare Bookstore" and several shop front were open on Fuzhou Road, North Sichuan Road, and they now run book sales and auctions, have a publishing arm, etc.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Original business card with autograph dedication as 'Saygilarimla' (With my regards) in Turkish by a pen. 5,5x9 cm. Cihad Baban as Turkish Minister of Culture. Mustafa Cihad Baban was a Turkish journalist, author, and a parliamentary deputy in the 1950s and 1960s. Baban attended Galatasaray High School, Istanbul, and graduated from Istanbul University in 1934. As a journalist, Baban contributed to newspapers including Son Posta, Yeni Sabah, Cumhuriyet, and Tercüman, and he was one of the founders of the Turkish Journalists' Association in 1946. He also wrote a variety of books. Baban was elected in the 1946 general election for the Democratic Party, representing Istanbul. He was re-elected in the 1950 general election and 1954 general election, representing Izmir Province until the 1957 elections, in which he was not elected. He was a member of the constituent assembly which wrote the 1961 Constitution of Turkey, and was Minister of Tourism and Promotion (January to August 1961) in the 1960-1 post-coup government of Cemal Gürsel. In the October 1961 general election he was elected again for the Republican People's Party representing Istanbul, and in the 1965 general election representing Çanakkale. He later served as Minister of Culture in the 1980-3 post-coup government of Bülend Ulusu.

The drawing is lifted from a 1933 Autocar photograph taken after the May 6th 1933 JCC Brooklands International 250 mile (not 500 mile race as shown on the print). Eddie came second in this race and Elsie 'Bill' Wisdom finished 3rd in the car depicted, which is famously MG Magnette K3-003, Car 39 in the Mille Miglia that year by Captain G. Eyston and Count G. Lurani, As No 17 this same car also won the 1933 Ards Ulster TT at the hands of Tazio Nuvolari when his riding mechanic was Alec Hounslow. Zustand: Very good. - Black-and-white publicity photo, 10 inches high by 8 inches wide. Inscribed by English at bottom right and signed "Ralph English". There are a few small creases to the emulsion & the corners are lightly bumped. Very good. A full-length photo of Ralph English standing on a floor of ice with a satiny theatre curtain behind him. He is depicted smiling, wearing evening attire, a top hat and ice skates. He is leaning slightly backwards, his left arm supporting his back, his other arm held aloft with three juggling pins gripped in the fingers of his right hand. The inscription reads: "To Fred / anyone that needs information about ice skates should see you. Boy!! you set me right. / Lots of luck - / Ralph English / Ice Cycles 1931".

Receipt for a gift of 200,000 francs by Marc Favrat, of the complete wardrobe of the deceased Princess Elisabeth of Romania, former Queen of Greece, as well as some furs coats, objects of emotional value, and personal belongings from the villa "Rosalba" in Cannes, taken with them to their future domicile with Prince Nicholas of Romania in Madrid: "De plus, S. A. R. nous a fait comme cadeau 'don' de la garde-robe complète de S. M. la Reine Elisabetha ainsi que certaines fourrures, et divers objets dont nous étions attachés [.]". - Together with the Princess's lover Marc Favrat, the Breckner sisters were among the servants and circle around Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956) who stayed with her until the end. Elisabeth had settled in Cannes some years after her expulsion from Romania in 1947, when the Romanian People's Republic was proclaimed. In France she met the much younger aspiring artist Favrat, who became her lover and whom she made her equerry and adopted son in the year of her death. - With blind-embossed letterhead "Maison civile en France de S. M. la Reine Elisabeth".

Two letters to a general with apologies for his late response due to Princess Elisabeth of Romania's worsened state of health, and with thanks for an article in the recipient's "Revue": "Malgré les tristes heures que nous traversons, je tiens à vous remercier très vivement aussi que votre collaborateur, d'avoir su, par l'article paru dans votre Revue, faire repouver davantage le Grand prestige que mérite la personnalité magnifique de Sa Majesté [.]" (11 Nov. 1956). - The longer letter to Baron Franz von Hallberg zu Broich about the recently-deceased Princess, her last resting-place, financial worries, the still-continuing adoption process, and rental debts paid by the Crown Prince of Hohenzollern, communicated through H. J. Oemichen: "Dans le soucis de respecter le voeux unanime de tous les amis de S. M. en France pays, qui fut comme une seconde patrie pour Elle [.] et enfin dans le but d'éviter des frais importants de transfert, je crois qu'il est nécessaire, dès moins pendant un certain temps de laisse S. M dans la crypte de l'Eglise Russe [.]" (no place or date). - A short memoir of Princess Elisabeth's life, the two lists noting family members and Royal Highnesses, the note announcing Elisabeth's death. - Marc Favrat gained fame through his relationship with Princess Elisabeth of Romania (1894-1956), who finally settled in Cannes some years after her expulsion from Romania in 1947, when the Romanian People's Republic had been proclaimed. The much younger aspiring artist Favrat became Elisabeth's lover, equerry, and adopted son in the year of her death. - Two leaves with printed monogram, memoir with blind-embossed letterhead "Maison civile en France de S. M. la Reine Elisabeth", slightly browned ib places. The two shorter letters crossed out in blue pencil.

An album of 128 black and white photographs and 12 colour postcards, detailing a trip to Ceylon in 1954, cord tie. 25 x 33cm. Few postcards loose, leaves trifle friable, cloth-covered boards little shelf worn, overall in good condition. Although the album begins with aerial shots of the P&O Stratheden in Sydney, and includes a few non-contemporary studio photographs of Ceylon, the majority of the album is comprised of private photographs, with handwritten captions and dates. Loosely inserted at the rear is the original photographic film within a Kodak-branded sleeve, a 14-page stapled booklet introducing guests to the Galle Face Hotel in Colombo, and an itinerary of a motor tour of Ceylon, presumably undertaken by the album's creator.
